Deadeye - Death at the Classic Regatta

Dear lovely East coasters, from the sanctuary of the river Deben, I have written a sailing novel that very kind people say is good. It’s available on Amazon by Jez Evans, I hope that this doesn’t contravene the rules to mention it but I could do with some readers and a 5-star review or two. (Or...

Heading for the Baltic/Limfjord question 2- wind

We were discussing (not quite arguing) whether the prevailing winds around the Baltic Skagerak/ Limfjord eastern side at Thyboron entrance would be northeasterlies or southwesterlies in Late June/early July. What are your thoughts, please?

Atlantic Crossing - the biggest dilemma, what shall I buy them for Christmas that will be useful?

Any ideas for a small but indispensably useful Christmas present for cruisers heading off (actually next winter) on an Atlantic circuit? Thanks for help!!!

The breath of Angels John Beattie

This book was a slow burner for me but I loved it by the end. It’s got three distinct parts. I won’t spoil it for you. Beattie is painfully honest about what he thinks about his crew. And the ending is quite extraordinary. Gripping read.

    Have you been to Thyboron?

Has anyone sailed Harwich to Thyboron before? What are your thoughts on this trip? I am imagining the Limfjord is a lovely place to sail a season. Is that correct?

My wife thinks tied to the side, I think freedom

My wife agreed to us taking the kids and living on a barge conversion on a pontoon, actually in a very nice spot, last boat out with a pretty view. But I can't help thinking that living on a boat would be inconvenient, so if we're going to do it, (and I want to) shouldn't we be living on a big...

    Holland next summer?

Hello, all. It’s been 5 years since I crossed the channel. (We have been exclusively in the river with the kids). Next year we are thinking of Holland from Harwich. My little children will travel by ferry. I have a salty sea dog to help me get there. What’s the night shift? Is that a flotilla...

inside or outside the sands for Woodbridge haven to Ramsgate - Calais

I've just been reading some 2009 forum advice about Ramsgate to Calais and the Goodwin Sands. We are starting from the Deben and planning to sail down to Ramsgate first before heading on to Calais. I've got a copy of the Thames Estuary crossing guide (yesterday) but I wondered what people...

kiddiwinkles - no doubt asked before, but do they cope on board for months and years?

I can't quite persuade my wife that we could live the dream and sail off into the sunset with our 2-yr-old. She (my wife) likes the idea. She can sail although she's nervous of the big bits of water. But she really can't imagine having a small child in a small (anything under house-sized) boat...

    Small children

My wife thinks having a 2-and-a-half year old on board would be really hard. Is our little one too young for liveaboard life even if we only do french canals and day sail the med? Any thoughts?

    Were you pushed?

Tagging onto the back of Ian C.'s thread about "actually doing it" and sailing off for a sabbatical, I wanted to ask if there were particular moments in life that create the impetus to sell up and sail away? So many of us dream of it, but only the few - you lot - (and more and more of you all...

cost of re-spray in new colour

Could anyone give a rough price to re-spray a 27-foot sailing boat in another colour? My wife prefers blue to white! Oh, yeah, ...and if I have to do a VC tar job over the winter would that mean I have to replace the gel coat and could do a colour change at the same time?

    sailing stockholm - advice

Can anyone give me some personal accounts of sailing in the swedish stockholm archipelago. I was there 10 years ago and sailed for 4 days. We only hit the one rock and had fair weather. Were we especially lucky? Anyone been around there for a longer spell and got an opinion about the place?!!

    vc tar - sticky job?

I am in the process of buying (oh,no, here I go again) a varne 27 - does the surveyor's recommendation to strip back and apply vc tar within in the next 2 yrs cause concern about going ahead with buying this boat? I hear it can be a big job and needs to be done under cover. All opinions...

    reconditioned engine v brand new

The boat i'm thinking of buying has been given a poor survey ont its engine. I will probably not agree the price of a new engine from the owner, but is a reconditioned engine worth the money or should I at least try for a new engine? This one is 16hp, if that makes any difference. All interest...

    When to start painting?

Not that I couldn't spend the next few weekends in bed, but when is the optimum moment to paint the hull and varnish the woodwork. When I had a plastic boat, we slapped on anti-foul 2 weeks before launching. Is it the same for the hull as the bottom? Or should I just do it when the sun shines...

    next year's cruise

next year\'s cruise I'm beginning to get itchy feet already about where to go next year. Last year we tried ostend - robert is worth the 12 hour crossing alone - can anyone suggest a similar option from the Orwell of good value?
