I have just been dried out against a wharf, using some fenders belonging to the wharf. These were old ones covered in some sticky goo, which is now firmly adhered to my topsides. I have tried to clean it off with hull cleaner (oxalic acid), paint thinners, and Vim. None of these has made any difference. Does anyone know what I should try next to remove this yukky stuff. Many thanks.

G'day Alan,

Can you provide a little more information; did the thinners take some colour whit it when applied, indicating that it would remove it if were not so thick. Acids only work on organic matter and sounds more oil based, the abrasion caused by Vim in powder form may cause a loss of gloss, so best not used.

Have you tried to scrape the bulk off with a wooden or plastic scraper then use thinners ?

You could try a small amount of the 2000 series thinner, as used for epoxy paints, just don't leave it on the paintwork too long.

Hope this helps. . . . . . .

Ref growing old. Yes it's inevitable (apart from the not very appealing alternative), but I don't want to take the option of growing up so will continue to look for a boat.

Swarfega hand cleaner is worth a try before using anything more aggressive. Rub it in with a dish scrubber then wash off with water. Worked a treat when we got oil and tar on our inflatable.

Admiral boat cleaning products do a cleaner that will take this goo off - I saw a demo this weekend by our local boat valeting service. They used it on fenders, but it will work on the hull without damage. Hope this helps.

Hi Alan

If your boat is fiberglass try Acetone, it removes just about everything from gelcoat, I haven't found anything it won't remove yet

I have found that Wipe Out gets most things off - if you follow the instructions and leave it on for a bit it seems to lift out almost anything.
