the best dive sites are: Exactly the same part of the sea where most boats and skippers want to be.

[/ QUOTE ]

Thats not normally true because the wrecks are wrecks because they were where they didnt really want to be !

Dover is very tight and Tracks of pleasure boats are easy to predict.

I mile off Dover w
I mile off dover E

Dover W to Varne
Dover W to Calais
Dover E to Calais
All 138' across TSS

As a keen horticulturist I wouldnt pick wild flowers in the Central reservation of the M1 no matter how rare they were !

The wrecks I like to dive are the ones that are offshore in slightly deeper water. The ones on the rocks are usually undiveable most of the time and are so broken it's difficu;t to distinguish whats what.
Of cause we don't dive in the busiest bit's, that would be silly....but there again diving can be silly at times /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Mitch,

where abouts were you diving (essex?). Ill keep my eye open for a alluminium cat, see if we can get a name ....

I would have thought that Diving/Fishing etc where a boat is stationary or at least not moving at speed that any slightly intelligent skipper would want to steer clear ... I certainly do - no matter what the reason .... it I find it incredble that a boat (and if professionally driven) would come that close at that speed - he should be seriously given a good talking too .... there is one such (white) fishing cat in Essex that seems to think that he has priority anchoring rights in the Raysand channel crossing - such that no other craft (with draught of 3" +) can cross without coming into contact - again I have had word in his shell like -- and he was of the oppinion that as he was a charter vessel he had more right to be there than any othere vessel - therefore he has now lost his right to a sensible conversation and all pleasure vessels have deemed it nessessary to pass over the channel as per normal with no regard for him - let him take the liability for his customers safety - no slowing down either 20+ knts past him within 20ft, unless he anchors out of the channel ...

Still that said and rant over, I still cant believe that someone would come that close to you at that speed, for any reason. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

training cant teach common sense, you would not drive a car
into an other if it was stopped in front of you but it do,es happen all to often, sadly stupidity and ignorance are the two
qualifications that the minority of boaters pass with flying
colours,

remember~ if the other guy aint moving he might actualy
need your help, and not run into. you dont need traning to work that out.

I was standing by a Rinker 232 yesterday that had a fishing pot round his prop (yes they shoot the nets right across the harbour entrance) waiting for the ILB to turn up and untangle him when to my disbelief we were told to get out of the way by a group of sailing cruisers engaged in their Sunday morning practice of protesting each other round 3 blow up bouys. I`m afraid the moderator would not allow me to print my response /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

i think the problem is the lack common sense shown by some boaters.
As much as we all want un-regulated boating maybe a teensy bit of informal education in certain areas could work....?

not wishing to detract from your underlying 'reminder' I can't help pointing out that this comment is entirely inconsistent with the original post and reference to a dive charter boat's antics.

We were diving out of Swanage. I asked the local skippers if they knew the boat. They did, it's a new kid on the block, and they don't know the name of the boat.....I'll find out though!

Eh? Don't understand what you mean?
Just cause he's a charter boat doesn't mean he doesn't need some education!!
About a month ago we were diving the wreck of the Scyala in whitsand bay. My partner and her buddy were just about to surface when a "professional" boat went dirrectly into them catching them on his ladder whilst attempting to get close to his divers! Needless to say I "educated" him!!

My post has done what was intended, look at the veiws count across the 3 forums! If it helps prevent one accident, it's educated someone
Thanks for you comments

I think you have done a great job to bring the flag and problems to everyones attention.
You have managed not to get abrasive in doing so , I would have probably lost my composure /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well done /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Now you have educated us I think you still need to be careful where you dive as there are plenty of other idiots that dont read this forum and to expect to pop up and say boo from the depths in a busy area is not really the best plan.

Bit like dressing up as a traffic cone and jumping out from a contra flow " Aha caught you, you didnt notice the men at work sign" ...................splat/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: alpha flag

yep agree, we never dive where it's really busy.....or at least where it'd make it awkward for boats to "go around us"

When i'm in "boat mode" on Latest Trick I don't mind deviating a few hundred yards to avoid leisure fishing boat, sailing boats etc. even if they are on my ideal route.
Ultimately we are all sea users, so all should take precautions to kepp everyone safe.

Must go do some work now!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
