we all know that nearly all of the upper thames is beautiful,i always enjoy the view when i pass bossom's boatyard and become aware of the suddenly wide river at PORT MEADOW.

it is extra special to us knowing that we have not long cleared osney bridge, which the locals call the W@@@@R FILTER!

Thank goodness for low bridges.

I have a very modest little boat on the very upper Thames. It is a sometimes idylic place and generally peaceful with narrow boaters returning waves, (of greeting), from motor boaters and rowers over-taking me with courtesy!

Yesterday I visited Boulter's Lock at Maidenhead as a pedestrain and was amazed that people might spend quite that much money on a super motor boat so they could sit on the tenth floor, (possible slight exageration), and look down miserably at the ice cream scoffing public. They were no more cheerful than the stoney faced chap in the Ferrari who roared up and down the road hoping people would point at him. Plus I saw a narrow boater and a motor boater in the lock completely ignore each other to the point where continuing the ignore was more difficult than saying hello or nodding - but they managed it.

It's nicer at Lechlade...

I have been poor, and I have been not-poor.

The conclusion is, it's better to be unhappy in comfort than poverty ;)

I would rather be miserable in a Ferrari/ Princess 42 than a trailer launched motorboat. :D

Apologies - I wrongly assumed you had said 'miserable in a ... than happy in a ...'

Rather it was a statement of where you would rather be miserable! I guess that is wholly up to the individual.

Ah, I see now ;).

When I had my Fairline 40, I had zero disposable cash left for the boat. Now with my Mayland 18 and trailer, at least I'm slightly better off :D.

Another for Mapledurham to Goring ,Watson 1959 if you ever do get to Goring then walk the hounds over the bridge to Streatley straight over the x roads by the Bull pub endure the heart attack inducing walk up Streatley hill to the very top and car park on your right...corner of car park is gate into field walk along top to end and viola a view of the Thames vally to take your breath away all the way to Whitnham clumps and downstream for miles ...knocks any view from Cliveden into a cocked hat imo .
Better bet is simply drive the car to car park ,That bit is called Lardon Chase and the Hollys equally good view is across the road walk through the woods....very worth the effort face Steve.
Edit the top end is good to moorings just upstream of Pikhill lock on bend in field give you views of the Barn owls hunting around farmoor resseee bank and the field of said mooring most evenings....magic end to the day face .

Well, we finally made it up to Lardon Chase with the dogs! Sturmovogel...you're absolutely right...what a fabulous walk & view!

When we arrived at the car park we suddenly realised that we'd been here before. However, as you suggested, we passed through the gate and followed the path along the top ridge of the field on the left. Once you round the far end and bear left, the second field had cows in so we gave that a miss, dropped down to the right towards Streatley and exited just by The Bull. Took a wander over the bridge then right along the river bank for a while (to the house with the glass room/cube overhanging the bank). Turned round here, let the dogs have a swim, back to the bridge and that FANTASTIC coffee shop (CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKES!!!!!).

The bit where it all went wrong was when we had to walk all the way back to the car park! Still: no choice as the car was up there:D Back up past The Bull then through the field.....and what felt like a 200 mile vertical hike....

Legs aching.....wonderful views of Streatley/Goring....and earned my 9 pint keg of Loddon's 'Hoppy Appeal' on the way home (10p from each pint to the Poppy Appeal....thats my excuse anyhow).

Great suggestion for a walk.....thanks:D

That is a treck and a half going back up the hill a real cardiac inducer ,You must have passed us then i was fishing in a little boat tied to the bridge support far side or if earlier in the weir pool itself .
The other walk through the woods across from the car park also has some splendiferous views ,glad you enjoyed them Steve.

I think £4k for berthing, licence and insurance, and another £1k for fuel and servicing.

She's a kind boat to own in fairness, but add many hours of polishing and T&C!
