Got my Yachtmaster! Really enjoyed the week despite the cold, although the mix of the instructees was not good with 2 potential Yachtmasters, who had done the theory, needing more of a competent crew course. One did not take any exam as he was not even a competent day skipper, the other two did Coastal Skipper. On the exam we left the Itchen c 20:00 on Friday. I was tasked with taking us to Wooton Creek via the Bramble post (at lowish water) struggled up and down various transits until I eventually found the unlit bastard (no moon so impossible to spot unless within 15 yds) , coastal skippers then took us into Beaulieu via Cowes. I then had to take the boat to Newton Creek and get us moored on a bouy (3am). During the sail there I had a MOB under sail (thought that was a bit OTT doing a MOB in the dark under sail .. but managed it OK).Has to sail off the bouy in Newtown Creek in the morning after which a Coastal skipper took over. I then had to sail onto a buoy on the Hamble (stiff F5) and berth and deberth from some awkward spots. This was then followed by blind Nav from Calshot to a bouy near Netley with zero visibility. Examiner gave me it even though we were 50yds away when I said we should be at it ... I'd have been upset if he had'nt!!!

All in all a really enjoyable and challenging experience. Right! Whats next ..

Strewth mate, getting tricky are they?

When I got mine it was a doddle compared with what you had to do. They giving the examiners a bit of raw meat these days? Congrats on getting through.

Well done!

Sounds like your examiner really put you though the mill!

How much assistence were you allowed from electronics?

The reason I ask is; I was recently talking to a Solent based YM examiner who not only allowed any electronic aid to navigation to be used but said that he would probably fail any canditdate on a boat with GPS or Radar who did not use it., when it would increase safety to do so.

Your exam also pionts up the vast difference in the standards expected by different examiners.

Well done.

COME ON TEAM.

It belongs to all of us. We were the ones telling him what not to say. Even so he went and asked if the instructor was suffering from piles...
Scuttlebutt YM - has a certain ring don't you think?

Well done Jimi. I found that although I thought I knew everything about sailing before the exams and courses, it taught me to open my eyes and learn 101 new ways to do something.

You did the same blind nav course that I did. - only he had to tell the helmsman to alter course to avoid hitting the bouy! well - good story!

Congratulations! Sounds like you needed to concentrate hard..

I nearly made a gaff going into Newtown on a night as black as your hat a while back. Wouldn't have fancied it with someone breathing down my neck!!

Nice one.

Well done Jimi. Really pleased for you. I particularly admire you for putting your head above the parapet. Must have taken some determination and bloody-mindedness [irony] which is (dare I say it) totally out of character?[/irony]

Out of curiosity, how big is the gap between Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster standard in the exam?

Are you saying that tag doesn't make the text flash on and off in luminous green? It does on my PC. Must be something wrong with yours.

Jeremy_W, the syllabus is the same for CS and YM and you can be asked to perform the same party tricks in an exam, but [considerably] greater allowance is given in a CS exam for mistakes or queries arising from inexperience - the overriding requirement in both is that you are safe. It used to be the case that CS was often awarded as a consolation prize to failed YM candidates. Recently, though, this has been increasingly frowned upon.
