My NTM Hustler 30 has a plastimo 2500 cooker that is currently fed from a gas bottle housed in a jury-rigged, unsealed box in the front starboard cockpit locker. The bottle regulator is connected directly to the cooker through the starboard bulkhead using a flexible rubber hose only although this is protected by a short length of clear plastic pipe where the hose actually passes through the bulkhead.

It's really not very secure, any gas that leaks would obviously end up in the bilge, and I'm really not comfortable with it. I also want to install a propex gas-fired heater so now is the ideal time to sort this problem out properly and fit a 'gas safe' system.

So what to do? The diesel tank and spare fuel is stored in the portside cockpit lockers so I want to avoid that little lot and anyway, the cooker is on the starboard side so the starboard front locker would seem a sensible place to put the propex heater. I could then run a copper pipe through to the cooker (with an appropriate armoured flexy hose for the gimbal) and take a 'T' off to the heater. A gas tight locker that drains from the bottom out through a new skin fitting on the transom is apparently the modern way to do it but where to obtain one suitable and where best to install it? I saw some pics of the cylindrical top-opening gaslow lockers that could be mounted flush in the cockpit that looked the dogs proverbials but I cannot seem to find anywhere to actually buy one! I suspect I would want at least 4.5kg bottle capacity so that I could have one in use and another stored elsewhere as a spare.

Further back beyond the aft locker is a manual bilge pump which I could move to the port side I assume. Then I could flush mount a proper gas locker in that space but it's a bit tight there I suspect. S'pose I could bolt some kind of external locker to the pushpit and then connect to the copper pipe run through a deck fitting but it's already quite cramped back there with a horshoe, windvane mountings, OB bracket etc and the stern end is pretty narrow on the Hustler anyway. It would prob look a bit pants too.

Any advice? What kind of installation do you have? Pros and cons? I need some genuine inspiration.... :?

Regards...

Kev

You can buy them here.

Or, make one yourself in GRP or plywood lined with GRP.

Thanks pvb... I have carried out quite a number of google searches but have never seen that company. :o

There are some HERE but eye watering prices. Maybe a DIY one would be better and could be tailored to your available space there was a feature in PBO a while ago on making one. You must have an adequate drain for any gas leaks which must be free draining overboard. Some yatchs have a gas locker on deck forward of the mast which deals with the ventilation issues.
I store my spare bottle in the anchor locker which has a drain but I suspect not big enough but should be OK if the cap is kept on the bottle.

The current "preferred" method seems to be a bulkhead mounted regulator so make sure you have sufficient space to fit one as well as get the gas bottle in. I also fitted a bubble tester in the locker, yet more space.

Got the local GRP man to make and fit custom box and lid.

Personally, I don't see why a bulkhead mounted reg should be any safer than a standard set up given that all the bottle connections take place within the sealed bottom draining locker, but hey, maybe there is something I'm not aware of. I would plan to have an inline bubble tester mounted immediately outside the locker to allow me to test the external connections.

Incidentally, although the link pvb posted was very interesting (those are the types of locker I had in mind), there is no (online) way to find out more information about those particular products or even order them.

Hi Kev

I bought one of these for £119.95 from http://www.force4.co.uk/339/Force-4-Gas-Bottle-Locker.html

I wanted to use Butane gas but due to costs for butane lockers I went for Camping Gaz, surprisingly and found it lasts just as long and is a hotter flame.

Also fitted gas detector/monitor and testing system, all copper pipe to galley then SS armoured cable to oven fitting.

Easy to fit and it seals.

Bubble tester inside the locker tests the downstream connections. Bubble tester outside the locker may have a leak before the tester (and hence and undetected leak outside the drained locker).

I s'pose that's true...

Caer Urfa's set up looks nice but no way I'm gonna be able to fit that anywhere in my cockpit...

Had you considered phoning them?

Looks nice, but might not pass a critical surveyor's examination. Side-opening lockers are supposed to have gas-tight doors, but the link he gave said that the door is vented by a gap. Also, braided hoses are generally unapproved, as their condition can't be checked.

Locker Gas Container

Is This what you need ?

Looks as if it's below the waterline already.
Dont think so..Its not in the boat any more So cant check. Never in 6 years had any problems with it though. New identical Beneteau has external Gas locker as standard. So I dont need it. Thats a very Deep locker if you kneel in it you can close the lid :)
