Yet again, a report from sunshine Med - NOT!

Crikey that’s shocking .
We have stayed in Rapallo ,it’s not as sheltered as Portofino .
Porto is a natural shelter for S, W and N , but less so for E .
Rapallo has no natural shelter as it’s a man made 60/70 ,s marina like many others has to face the full force of a S dir storm .Oh dear -more insurance uplifts hugely greater than expected coming everybody’s way .

Hope it won't be as bad as in Rapallo where the mole was destructed by a wave: https://youtu.be/andOXmU5tvc

Some of the videos doing the rounds on Facebook are quite incredible.

True for Portofino itself - in fact, its heritage is of a small fishermen village.
But according to this morning news, the (beautiful!) coastal road connecting S.Margherita to Portofino, i.e. the only road for reaching PF, was damaged by waves and is now closed... :ambivalence:

For the records, the latest news about the catastrophic breakage of the harbor wall in Rapallo are as follows:

- more than half of the 390 boats moored there are reported as "destroyed". I guess that not all of them are really total loss, but a huge devastation anyway.
- waves in the open sea were estimated to have reached up to 10m.
- the 6.5m high harbor wall was demolished for a length of about 300m.

There are obviously extensive damages also elsewhere along that stretch of coast: road to Portofino destroyed, railway interrupted, several casualties (though none in the marina, afaik), etc.

Very sad.

This is blamed for the culprit of the damage, which as the video shows I cannot really understand how. Since the wall is a peace of concrete above the break-water.
It does not look to be the break-water.
As soon as the wall fell about 1700 CET I was shown a video, and while I thought, oh shit, I never thought it would create such havoc.

All very sad. So many nice boats in Rapallo. As in most of similar situations I think the real havoc came from some boats who broke the moorings.

The strange thing is this, that the more open Santa Margherita seems to have little damage.

Fwiw antibes is fine today. Sunny, light breeze, some swell out at sea but no white horses and the marina is calm. All forum boats look fine (on a walk by) - jimmy le builder's, silver dee's, Deleted User's, johng39's, a&k's (both), nickh's and mine. The water level is towards the top of its normal range (i.e. 15cm above mid point) but no big deal. There are 2 cruise ships sheltering on E side of the cap, one being henryf's I think.

Jimmy I'm in antibes tmrw 2pm (today actually - Tuesday) so will check the forum fleet and report back. Deleted User nickh silver dee and A&K too. I wouldn't expect problem in vauban - high water level tightens your bow lines which is what you want in a westerly if you point the way all forum boars point. As it happens none of my cars are parked on the quai, phew.

Very grateful jfm. I asked my lady wot does to take down the bimini after we left the other day and she is supposed to store all the cushions in the crew cabin too so I would be interested to know if that has been done and of course whether the boat is still floating!

Yes. Full credit to this crew trying to save their boat, but I think as shown in the second video they may have been unsuccessful (I cant be sure on that score though). Must be devastating for those involved

Jeez. Are both those videos from Rapallo? What about boats at the other marinas in the same bay at St Margherita and Portofino?

That's a shocking sight, and what an awful noise. Were they trying to power the boat forward to stop it hitting the quay?

I guess the crews of these boats will lose their likelihoods (for a time) as well.

yup Bimini removed and cushions nowhere in sight so I guess in crew cabin. Boat seems fine.

Many thanks. Managed to contact Jo Long in the meantime and she reckons winds in Antibes worst she's ever experienced
