Yesterday's thread Today

The date which appears against a thread in the index is the date of the last post added to the thread.

The first post may have been days, weeks months or even years ago but if someone adds another post today "Today" will appear as the date in the "last post" column.
The default is for threads to be sorted in order of the last post with the most recent first although you can alter that if you wish.

You will also notice that the threads on the "For sale" board are sorted in order of first post, not in order of most recent.

Indeed, it's quite disconcerting if not confusing :(

But the OP should know, as a global website, posts are relative to the local time reference. I run GMT+1 on my laptop so I have to adjust accordingly...

One or two people have complained about it. Its been discussed and in the end it was decided it was better for them to remain in the order in which they were originally posted.
That way new ads are always at the top of the pile, old ads cannot be brought back to the top by someone adding a post but if an item remains unsold it can be readvertised. AFAIK, at least, there is no objection to that.
