Yeoman chart plotter - any good?

I'm thinking of buying a yeoman chart plotter, but wanted to get some views from others who may have one.

The main question - are they accurate and reliable?

Any information would be greatly apprecaited.

I've used one, found it great while moored and sitting still, but found when underway if the plotter head came of the chart, it makes it inaccurate, but thats just my experience other people may have had good results with one. Don't really think there is any substitute for good old bretton plotter and dividers. they dont need electric/batteries. All INMHO of course

Absolutely superb bit of kit. I was asked by Anglo-Hellenic to get hold of six full size ones and I am told the Masters of the vessels that got them think they are wonderful. I don't really recommend the Sportsman version but if you have a decent chart table and can lay the regular one down you will love it.

Can't coment but my raythion thingy, Just dose it. I didn't pick it, it was on the boat. I just got it wired up to the auto pilot. Never read manuel.Just press button A and go. Or B and go some where else. If Yeoman is better then all Ok with me. But IMHO. It cant get beter than move curser and say goto. And your home. I know it's not just as simple as that put as far as the chart plotter is concerned it is.

I (and my wife who navigates) swear by it. Good combination of GPS and paper chart, and affordable. Uploads waypoints instantly. Make sure the clips hold the chart securely.

Ah But toMo just testing piccy. My computer thingy program was caput. but now mr next door, computer wizzy, internet zoomy chap has fixed and hopfully can zoomy any piccy wanted. With a little help from my friends. But just to upset B1 going to have a go on my own!!!!

I have one, all wired up etc. but never use it, apart from showing peeps how it works, but it is reliable and a good bit of kit. I just like to use slightly older techniques, plotting with pencil etc. But you do that with yeoman aswell, maybe I should start using it!

Did you know?
The Yeoman automatically updates any magnetic variation applicable to the paper chart you are using? How's that for a well thought out bit of technology.

Can\'t see the point of a Yeoman

A Yeoman is a device to allow you to mark your position onto a chart. To do that you have to perform various movements and operations. So why not just get a normal plotter that does all this automatically, instantaneously, in real time, with no worry about the paper slipping even in a F5 on the flybridge?

Because an electronic Plotter is never up-to-date and the screen is too small to give an overall picture whereas a Yeoman uses paper charts, gives you the full chart to look at and takes a moment to show where you are on that chart and you see instantly where everything else is in relation to you. To do this on an electronic plotter you would need to update daily and have a screen at least about 3' wide.
Don't kock it until you have used both - in earnest.

Only as accurate as your GPS of course, but yes, they are as accurate as your pencil mark would be.

I think they are an excellent bit of kit, and I used to work for them at the odd boatshow etc.

I now work in PC Chartplotting and the Yeoman is the perfect link between paper and any (compatible) electronic system you fit now or later.

A chart plotter will give you your Lat and Long to plot on a paper chart, get the best of both worlds, no?

The Yeoman gives you your lat & long too, either from its internal GPS if thats the one you bought or from the GPS you have plugged it into. Reminder... it also automatically adjusts for magnetic variation year on year so your compass courses are more accurate too.

Thanks for the offer but I've screwed it to the perspex. Can't wait to use it.



I know you bound to have a go. but I've used brass screws so it does not muck up the magnets.
