One quick question - how does one dispose of a full but corroded gas cylinder?
Getting rid of the gas is the least of your worries. What about the bladder of the lifejacket that has been abraded by the cylinder? I lightly grease the cylinders and then cover them with plastic bags. Since I started doing that - no rust!
Now, what's the best way of disposing of out of date UM actuators and should they be thrown in a bucket of water first?

It’s only the 9th Jan! And you are ending this years nagging? Poor show. Nagging you for reduced quality of nagging. Need to nag again at Easter!

At the end of a great day’s sailing last season I leant down into the deep starboard locker to stow the outboard. The little yellow toggle caught on the front of the locker and whilst I was more or less upside down the LJ inflated. It was somewhat disorientating until I worked out what had happened….but at least I experienced an inflation whilst wearing it. This season I have the dilemma of whether or not to leave my toggle outside dangling for all to see or to tuck it inside where it won’t catch on anything but would be less available if I wanted to fiddle with it.

decisions decisions.

Or option 3 you could buy something with a more modern trigger system that's less likely to catch but is still available. Spinlock do this and I'm sure others too.

Those images are a bit misleading but no, that’s the harness release which is also hidden until you need it. The release on the deck vest is a rubber handle flush with the jacket.

Edit to add that in picture 3 you can see the pull cord in yellow on the right of the image at the bottom. This yellow handle gets pulled out first and then tugged to activate. On the full Deckvest jacket this is on the upper part of the LJ even more protected.

I tuck the pull cord away and rely on the automatic trigger to go off. If it doesn't for any reason, I'm a good swimmer, and comfortable in the water, so I doubt I'd have much problem finding it. If things are so bad I can't, I doubt I'd be in a position to pull it anyway. This is, of course, something I fervently hope never to test!

Now, of course, there's the argument to be had about auto or manual LJs. There are arguments for both, but my risk assessment is that the occasions when an automatic deployment will save my life are far more numerous than when it will kill me.

Ideas for your MOB practice on your yacht. Doesn't take long and a great refresher if you've not been out for a while.

Without sails up, just using motor. Good practice for when one of your crew drops a fender in !

Sails up, then motor on with dropping or furling headrail. Standard practice.

Under sail to simulate motor failure. Great for reminders of wind awareness and general boat handling.

Enjoy!
