year round use

i have decided to keep my boat in use this winter so i phoned up GJW my insurers to see how much it would cost extra.
i was quite surprised when they refused to cover it on a swinging mooring or a fore and aft mooring, they would only cover it in a marina.
since we dont have one this is going to scupper my plans.
anyone come across this before and does anyone know of an insurance company that will cover me.

Hi there - My boat is in the water 362 days a year and has been for the last 5 yrs. I am insured with Bishop & Skinner. The only change is a slightly higher excess but not by much. £150 - £250 Nov -March.

I would be reluctant with bishop skinner, mine would have been £150 for the summer rising to £500 for the winter.... and that was after really pushing them, they really don't seem to like boats in all year round.

Try polestar insurance... I am pretty certain they will cover for all year round use and will not increase the excess during the winter.

Got the same - no mooring in winter.

GJW as well, and not about to change.
They have been first rate - only one claim, but settled within days.

i am with them and doesnt seem to be any extra to be in all year on trots, also have covered my small avon rib as the tender for little extra, superb company, they coughed up £10k year before last to repair the toe rail damage.

Not sure if this will upset you, but a guy on our swinging mooring on the lake is with SAGA. At first they said no, then changed their minds. I'm with Noble Marine 365 days ,but as a dinghy (my boat appears in their list as a dinghy so it's all legit). /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Yeh, sorry cant remember the broker but got my renewal thru today from Zurich...365 days. According to an underwriting friend of mine (I actually did know a real live underwriter) it depends upon factors such as previous claims experience, so 2 adjacent bays of similar nature with different claims experience will have different rates/exclusions. It may be just the guys with dodgy strops 4 winters ago that are letting you down.

Is it worth trying to get a winter berth in a marina? The total additional cost might be not that much .. and well worth it for the additional convenience?

365 days in use with Bishop Skinner. No increase in excess for winter, BUT I am in a mud berth, so that may be why.
Could still be worth asking them for a quote.

I had a bit of a laugh earlier this year. Looked at mooring at Fairlie Quay on the Clyde and at the same time picked up a brochure from their office with their associated insurer. But this recomended insurer wouldn't cover moorings at all

My boat is insured for a swinging mooring in the Exe all year round (not that I tend to leave it there in the winter - usually fnd somewhere more sheltered) with St. Margarets Direct (www.stmargarets.com). £251 for a Trintella 29, UK, continental waters Dover/Calais - Scillies/Brest. I'm only covered for about £10k value (I need to get a new survey/valuation to increase this) + £3m 3rd party liability.

I switched to them after GJW refused to cover me all year round.
