I have a Yanmar 2GM20. The dipstick for the gearbox is a short round rod with a single ring engraved aound it very close to the bottom end. But the book says the right oil level is the upper mark when the dipstick is in position but not screwed down. I can't see ny upper mark. Does anybody know the right level to fill to? Thanks.

I believe that single ring is the upper mark and there is no low mark.

Hi as Georgio says I also think that the engraved ring on the stick is the correct mark. I also have a 2gm20 and this is the mark I use, but have wondered the same, because when you change the oil, and it is clear, it is very difficult to see the fliud oil level?

Just as a matter of interest, I also suffer from the same senario with the starter button? It has been suggested to me to put a heavy duty cable straight from the starter motor to the start button but not sure how to do it so have'nt yet?

See possible solutions in the other Yanmar starter button thread

Heat the end of the dipstick to red heat and dip it into a bit of engine oil. You end up with a nice matt black finish that shows up the clear ATF level.

Note..
Not all gearboxes fitted to Yanmars use ATF. Several use standard motor oil.
Check your gearbox type / documents before changing /topping up oil.
