I have a six year old yanmar 3YM30, 500 hrs, with no service record.

The manual recommends Texaco long-life coolant 7997 or 7998, or Havoline Extended life coolant 7997.

Wise people on here have previously discussed this: (http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...rrect-havoline-XLC-coolant-for-Yanmar-engines). There are warnings about mixing incompatible coolants.

I am finding the the Texaco and Havoline coolants very hard to source. And I gather coolant technology has moved on further.

So my question is, can I use the newer "Prestone" coolant (https://www.holtsauto.com/prestone/products/coolant-antifreeze-ready-use/), which specifically claims to be compatible with all others?

I shall of course drain and flush, including the calorifier.

Many thanks for any advice

What you need is OAT type coolant (Organic Acid Technology) such as Halfords Advanced antifreeze and coolant

From:

There are two basic types of coolant available today dependent on the corrosion inhibitors used:
1. Inorganic additive technology(IAT)
2. Organic additive technology(OAT)
Inorganic Additive Technology
This is the traditional coolant based on inorganic additives and is called inorganic additive technology(IAT). It is a tried and proven chemistrythat provides a fast acting
protective film. The additives deplete and the coolant needs to be drained and replenished everycouple of years. This type can be used on all mixed metal engines with
components including steel, cast iron, copper, brass, aluminium and solder without any detrimental effect
Organic Acid Technology
The newer OAT coolants work differentlythan the older silicate based IAT coolants.Aluminium and ferrous metals form a surface-layer of corrosion in the presence of
moisture, even with the little bit of moisture in the air. OAT coolants prevent this metal-oxide layer that protects the surface against this corrosion
Inherent with their design, the OAT coolants last longer than the older traditional IAT coolants. This category of antifreeze cannot be used in systems containing yellow metals.
My bold.
I think the heat exchanger may prefer traditional IAT coolant.

The 3YM30s are designed for OAT (LongLife) additive. You can buy the pink stuff from Halfords at £25 for 5 litres ...... or go into your local motor factors and pick up 5 litres of exactly the same pink stuff for £12.

Prestone will be the same stuff (might not be the same colour though) but probably a lot more expensive.

Draining and flushing through with water is all you need to do but you can flush through with proper stuff as well if you wish. Plenty of info in other threads.
