Having just motored 100+ miles down the coast of Colombia, our engine was running as sweet as the proverbial nut, this morning to express my gratitude I changed gear/engine oils and oil & air filters; re-started and still running sweet as a nut. I stopped the engine to check oil levels were still OK and do a general check over, during which I discovered a split in the waterpump's belt, so changed that and re-tensioned it and the alternator's belt.
That's it, end of my interference; however, when I restarted the engine again, it made an less than happy clattering sound, I stopped it, rechecked things but could see no obvious problem. Having tentatively tried it again I find that above 900-950 rprm (tickover is 850rpm), it runs as sweetly as ever, but below 900rpm it rattles like a bag of hammers; the rattle definitely coming from within the engine rather than transmission or some other ancillary. The only other symptom if you can call it that is that if you add physical weight to the engine (I stood on the heat exchanger to get up into the cockpit) with it running happily at about 950rpm, the clattering begins again.

I can't see that I've done anything to cause the problem and my best guess is that I've perhaps had an engine mounting fail though I can't see/feel a problem with any and a real mechanic pronounced them 'in good order' less thantwo months/50 engine-hours ago. To add to the difficulty, we are out in the boondocks, so to get any spare parts/outside assistance we will almost certainly need to use the engine to get us there.

All advice suggestions would be appreciated.

The obvious culprit is an engine/belt cover which was removed to replace the belts and is now rattling against one of the pulleys at low revs when the engine is shaking around a bit more. Remove all covers and start it again.

3GM30F doesn't have a belt cover (well, mine doesn't).
Engine mount was my first thought as well.
Clutching at straws, but you've definitely accounted for all spanners etc?

Has something fallen under the engine so that when it vibrates at low revs it is banging something - this would explain the extra weight effect.
Has the muffler water trap shifted so it is rattling the engine box ?

Suggest you don't over tighten the water pump belt as it will cause early water pump failure

The moron thanks you once again Gentlemen.

The waterpump was just touching the starboard front engine mounting; it seems that two of my spare Z17.5/470mm waterpump belts are actually a bit longer than stated, fortunately the other two aren't.

Thanks again, I'm off ashore for a celebratory beer

Well done.

Glad you've got it fixed. Around Columbia I might have suggested that the engine would be coked up but...!
