under no circumstances use any oil type than the basic mineral oil. other wise you will be looking at an engine that will wear out in no time !
You will not find any yanmar agent that will use synthetic or semi synthetic oil.
There are a few that will use a non yanmar brand but thats the customers choice as the yanmar mineral based one is £20 plus vat.

The correct viscosity is 15W-40 and the specification should be CD or better. Providing your oil meets this spec it doesn't matter what brand you use.

interestingly caterpillar and cummins both endorse the use of synthetic oils even in the warranty period, i have used synthetic in my 2gm20 but changed to mineral because the rings were not seating properly, have since been told that if i run in on mineral and then change over to synthetic there shouldn't be a problem, the only prob in UK is price of synth and considering the oil has to be changed every 150 hrs that is going to be expensive............keith

The Yanmar engine is an old style diesel that needs running in - dont confuse it with modern car diesels that are filled with synthetic when new and have an oil change at 10000 miles. If you use synthetic on a Yanmar, it wont bed in the rings and you will end up with horrendous oil consumption and low power since the rings wont be sealing.

I use old style single grade diesel engine oil of the sort that used to go into busses and tractors. Something like a cc grade and not a cf.

Best thing is to ask Yanmar - they are helpful. And if you tell them you cant get their oil locally, they will undoubtedly tell you what to use as a substitute

Neither ..... you want a monograde oil suitable for a stationary diesel engine - I use Shell Rotella SAE-30 CD in mine, but then I'm in a warmer climate. Using high quality multipgrades seems to help glazing - ask your local Yanmar people what to use.
