Service time! Yanmar 1gm10 can someone tell me how to get the old oil out of the sump.Is there a drain plug or is it a pump job. If it is a pump where is the access hole?

Cheers

You pump the oil out of the dip stick hole.

1. Run the engine up to normal working temp to get the oil as runny as poss.

2. Stop engine!!!

3. Best now to use a Pela oil extractor - operates on a vacuum pump principle. Otherwise its one of the small hand pumps which are a pain.

4. When you have got as much oil out as you can, its time to remove the oil filter - messy job - and replace it with a new one. Remember to put a smear of fresh oil on the sealing ring before fitting the new filter

5. Finally fill up with new oil.

Think that about covers it but I've probably forgotten something!

Late last year I did the first filter change on my new 1gm10 - the filter that Yanmar had put on was so tight I bent my chain wrench. In the end I resorted to the time-honoured fool-proof method of driving a large screwdriver through it. Less messy than it sounds, and a lot easier than skinning knuckles with slipping strap wrenches.
Why oh why do Yanmar insist on cranking every single screw thread up so tightly. This is my second 1gm10 bought from new, and every single threaded component I've undone has made my eyes bleed.

When doing filter have some disposable nappies draped underneath - saves a lot of mess, especially with screwdriver method.

The plug facing forwards on the front of the sump holds some vital bits of the oil feed together - DO NOT undo!
But there is a drain plug on the left hand side (alternator) just behind the front mounting bracket.

I recently drained the oil from this plug. There is a strainer behind it that I slid out to drain the oil. The manual describes it as the oil suction pipe and doesn't show any other parts behind the plug. It all went back the same way, have I broken or dislodged something? The previous owner of the boat told me that he drained the oil from this plug.

Yep - I did the same (plug at front seemed best way to remove the C%$£) for 2 or 3 years running as advised by previous owner & put everything back - seemed ok.
The following 2 yrs used a pump as manual suggested.
Then sold boat in good faith !

There was a thread on the Yanmar help forum about this. There were dire warnings about the risk of loosening something inside so that the pipe didn't suck properly.
The other (inconvenient) plug really is a drain plug, apparently.

Its a bit strange as the "plug" only seems to hold a strainer in place, its right at the bottom of the sump, so below the oil level. I can't remember if the feed to the pump is internal or external. I suppose there is a risk that the strainer could be put in backwards and block the flow of oil. I ran the engine for about 30 mins after changing the oil to put a bit of charge back in the battery and it didn't seize, so I assume I haven't caused a problem. Just looked again at the manual, the 2 & 3 cylinder engines have an inverted funnel type pick up, I wonder if the warning is more relevant to them.

I can't find the old thread now - the Yanmarhelp forum seems to be defunct. I have a feeling someone stated that apart from the strainer the plug also held a pipe in place, which if it moved was impossible to re-locate from the outside.

Is there any Yanmar help website or forum now?
