Yanmar 1GM Didn\'t Start After a Sail

My Yanmar 1GM10 is normally reliable if sometimes a bit reluctant to start when it is cold, although it always has. Its fine in the current hot spell.

Anyway at the weekend there was no wind so we went for a motor. On turning for home the wind picked up so we unfurled the genoa and turned the engine off. Upon restarting about half an hour later it wouldn't.

It turned over the panel lights and buzzer sounded but no more than that. After quite a few attempts and head scratching after about 10 minutes it finally started.

Any ideas. A loose wire or starter motor pehaps?

Any ideas welcome.

If it's turning over then there's not much wrong with the starter motor. Usual reasons for not starting would include a blockage in the fuel line (diesel bug, water or detritus in the tank, stirred up during sailing for example). You can diagnose this if you have a tank drain, let some out into a jug and look for bits. Another possibility, less common, is a pinhole in a fuel line becoming apparent, letting air in. You will see fuel seeping out if this is the case, and find it in the bilges.

A pipe taped to a cane will syphon up the fuel in the bottom of the tank. If syphoned into a plastic water bottle you can see any water or debris in the fuel. In my case it took three quarters of a bottle before water changed to fuel. I changed filterss and everything and the motor has worked ever since.

Have you enough fuel in the tank? it should always be kept topped up to reduce condensation forming, was the starter turning the engine over fast enough? is it getting enough air?if you were heeling when sailing on a near empy tank air could be introduced into the system, a healthy warm diesel engine will start easily if its turned over fast enough and there is fuel in the system,so start from scratch, fill the tank up, check the condition of the battery and the connections including the earths,if all is ok and fuel is getting to the injector and it still wont start then you need a compression test, could be valves worn or rings sticking, chris.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Pampas - I used everything from nothing to maximum.

I'm thinking it must be an electrical connection. Fuel is almost full. Didn't heal as we were sailing down wind only under genoa.

Hopefully it will start this weekend!!

A diesel doesn't use anything electric to run. Unlike a petrol engine there is no ignition system nor are there sparkplugs. The IGM10 is an almost indestructable engine. I have two of them in my catamaran.

If it won't start, you may want to check the following.

1.) you are out of fuel
2.) the fuel filters are clogged
3.) air has found a way into your fuel lines and they must be bled again.
4.) defective fuel pump
5.) defective injector pump
6.) clogged injector
