Hey all

While looking at the wires on my engine I noticed these 2 hanging around doing nothing

When I compared this to this drawing

I then think is this how I install a tachometer? Am I correct in this thinking?
If yes then what tachometer would people recommend please?

Cheers

This is where you plug in the Yanmar pick up which goes in the hole and gets pulses from the flywheel. This is used in the more comprehensive control panel with the Yanmar tachometer.

It will be an expensive option to retrofit using Yanmar parts so most people take a feed from the alternator and use a generic tachometer available from many sources. I used a Durite one with an hour meter but there are many others available on Ebay. You might need a cheap optical handheld tachometer or a phone app to set the scaling correctly as it will depend on the relative pulley sizes.
There have been several previous threads on options for a tachometer.

If you want the original look, you might be able to score a used Yanmar tach from a boat diesel mechanic. I did this and it's worked out well. Make sure you get one with the correct pulse calibration written on the dial. It's probably 67 for a 1GM but others might know for sure.

Cheers, Graeme

Thanks for the replies, so now I am thinking about the feed from the alternator but I cannot figure out where it goes. I have attached some photos of the alternator in question and I see 3 wires (Red, Black and Blue). Do I connect to one of these or is it something else? Cheers

Unless you have an aftermarket alternator with a W terminal or take off wire already fitted you will have to add it yourself or get an alternator shop to do it for you. You need to solder a wire to the point P in the diagram in post #2 of the link below.
Some details in this thread Adding W terminal
If you are reasonably practical it is easy to do. The only problem I had was discovering that there is a small hole in the alternator casing to insert a thin rod to hold back the brushes when reassembling.

Far easier to use a sensor strapped to case of alternator and then to display ....... no alternator / engine wiring to mess with ...

I have these two as a set :

Diesel Engine RPM Tacho Sensor UNIVERSAL For Vehicle Truck Boat Yacht Waterpoof | eBay

52mm Car Marine Tachometer 0-4000 RPM Diesel Engine Tacho Gauge With Hour Meter | eBay
Interesting idea and looks simple to setup. Is it accurate and does anyone know if these are available from a UK site, so fed up with waiting for things to arrive from China

I haven't fitted mine yet ... but I have info from others that it works fine. The positioning on the alternator can lead to moving it around a bit till best position ...
