Pal of mine found some water in his Gbox on his Yanmar 12 .... drained, flushed and refilled with fresh oil.

Went for short run of about 4hrs and when checking box found it warm - hot ... he reckons about 40 - 50 C

I've never in all the years checked a gbox temp ... so question is to any out there with same engine / box : What temp is normal ? What temp is reccd max ?

Depends on where you are measuring the temperature but if you are measuring case temperature I regard that as a perfectly normal temperature and would start to get concerned at 80C.

Most of the heat felt in a gearbox casing will have been conducted heat from the engine crankcase. I would only get concerned if the thrust area around the output shaft was so hot I could not comfortably leave my hand there for more than a few seconds. This would be about 70C
