Yanmar 1 GM 10 engine re-build

can anyone suggest a good engineering firm to carry out repair or re-build to 1 GM 10 in Essex

French Marine at Brightlingsea would be a good bet; they are Yanmar dealers and have a good reputation.

French Marine are excellent, however when we needed extensive work their immediate reaction was that we should buy a new engine instead, and that purely based on our description of what went wrong. The engine's currently being rebuilt by Gerald Abbott, who was a lot more creative and gave us a good price. He has a workshop in Holbrook and covers a large area, 07880 721193.

Gosh, that takes me back. Used them for my MG Midget engine in 1969. They were very good then.

Gosnay don`t do marine engines and I already know about French, was hoping for cheaper alternatives!

Yanmar parts are horrifyingly expensive and a new engine might well be a better bet. A new head alone, fitted, will cost about 1/3 as much as a new engine+gearbox.

Although maybe risky Marine Enterprises are advertising a 1GM10 with 500 hours for just under £2000. Of course you have no idea what's going on inside but its cheaper than a new one and maybe a rebuild.

This may be an naïve question but why is it necessary to get a marine engineering firm to recon such an engine?
Surely if you have the workshop manual and it is fairly basic work any experienced diesel engine mechanic can do this work?
I know many people in my area have used a guy who is basically an agricultural machinery trained mech.
Is there some mysterious magic inside these engines?

I had a similar eperience last year with my GM2. Having spent hundreds of vouchers on gaskets, injector overhauls, thermostats etc, the yard engineer asked "how much more are you going to throw away on what could be a dead duck?"
He was right of course, I had already spent the equivelent of 1/4 of what the new Beta cost.
