Can anyone tell me where I might get hold of a user manual for my rather old (circa 1992) Yamaha 2B outboard engine. I've tried the Yamaha website but can't seem to find the model/year.

I have overheating problems caused by insufficient water cooling the engine. either the pipe is blocked or the impellor is not working (assuming they have an impellor). It starts very easily but soon dies as it gets hot.

The 2B is no longer made - almost certainly the water passages have become blocked with deposits/crud over the years.
If you used it in sea water you did always flush it through with fresh water after every use didn't you? :-(

I'd rather be sailing... :) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Why dont you take off the bottom of the leg and have a look at the impeller? Changing
them is not usually difficult. If it has disintegrated or has come away from its hub-
change it -you may have solved your problem. otherwise poke some wire through the
holes where the water comes in. Upwards from the water pump there will be a pipe
probably copper-make sure this is clear. Make sure the hole where the tell-tale jet of
water comes out is clear. If these measures do not make water circulate you will
either have to junk the engine or be courageous and separate the top and bottom
parts of the power head (dont remove the cylinder head!) The bolts holding these
together are at the top of the leg underneath the motor. You may have to use a
soft hammer and a little violence to separate them. This should expose a
labyrinth of water galleries-scrape them clean. Reassemble with a new gasket if
you can get one, or simply use instant silicone gasket from Halfords. This should do
the trick.

although the post below says not to take the head gasket off, I disagree. If you dont then you will not be able to remove the crud in the waterjacket around the cylinder itself. This is a job I used to do with mine evry 3-4 years- pull off the covers, undo the six bolts holding power train to shaft and seperate. There is a plate between power unit and shaft that has gaskets both sides. if you are having difficulty seperating them it is probably the join of the shaft to the bottom of the engine (a push fit!) keep trying, it will part eventually. then take off the cylinder head, you can then scrape all the crystillised salt out of the waterjacket and passageways. Give the waterways either side of the plate a quick spray of paint while pulling the bottom of the shaft apart to get at the waterpump. First time is difficult, thereafter if you use the right grease it comes apart easily and you just need a new gasket set, spark plug, and re-face the points and you have a nice little motor.

No I didn't....and i know that I should have, but....... It got a good going over a couple of times a season so I know that it's likely to be full of salt deposits and other horrible things. The amazing thing is that it starts easily, despite all of the mistreatment. Without some kind of reference manual I'm reluctant to start taking it apart as I'm not the most mechanically minded. However, I suppose i've nothing to lose and will follow the advice from others and have a go....starting with the impellor.

Thanks for all the advice
