Yamaha Gearbox Oil Check

I would like to check the gear oil level in my Yamaha 5 Water cooled single cylinder outboard(1980).

Is it checked against the level plug with the engine stood up or lying down flat?

I did ask our local dealer to order me a service manual but so far nothings turned up.Possibly he doesnt like encouraging owners to do their own maintenance.

its worth draining it to see if ther is are any metal particals in the oil or water which will indicate shaft seals leaking, the gear box uses such a small amount that if you need to buy any oil to top it up there should be enough in the tube to change it, the gearbox oil always seems to get neglected
