The steering of my Yamaha F4 has become very stiff irrespective of the tightening screw. It rotates much more easily in one direction than the other. Is this a known issue?

May be lack of decent lubrication ..... there are no grease nipples shown on the parts diagram ... is that really so?

I think Id simply remove the tilt lock and unbolt the two halves of the swivel housing and have a look-see.

If nothing broken clean up , lightly grease the swivel bushes and re-assemble. There's not a lot of rocket science in there.

watch out for the two little springs on the tilt lock , noting how they are fitted.

If it's the same as the F6C there's a friction band inside the leg. As you tighten the lever it tightens the band onto the inner part of the leg & prevents it's rotation.

On my engine the far end (non threaded) of the threaded part of the lever had come out of the band & tightening the lever distorted the band rather than tightening it around the inner part of the leg.

It is fairly simple to remove the cover & re-seat the friction band.

See pic below. 37 is the friction band; 38, 39, 40 are the tightening screw.

Thank you for the replies, comments and the diagram. It’s odd - it would only easily rotate in one direction when I made the post but yesterday morning, without having touched it further, it was free again in both directions. I need to take it part I think.
