hi,
my yamaha keeps cutting out intermittently, it will always restart straight away, i have tried all the usual remedys ie carb strip and clean but all to no avail, sometimes it runs perfectly and others cuts out every 100 yards. has any one else come across this or got any idea what it might be.
thanks in anticipation

Just a thought: your 'kill-cord' isn't by any chance just a little loose? [I'm assuming you have done the usual checks on fuel and cooling.]

I had a similar problem with my Yam 4hp. if I had the throttle set just above tick-over the engine had a tendancy to die. I gather that this is somthing to do with the carb needle. It has one for tick-over/low revs and another for driving at higher revs. Mine was cutting out because I was trying to run the engine at a point between the two.

Not sure if this helps but I have had to learn that while the engine is in-gear I have to keep the engine at tickover or 1/4 throttle+.

Hope this makes sence. Also I'm driving a 24' boat with the engine so I guess that the engine has a harder time than it would if pushing a dingy

Another area to check is the breather on top of the tank, if that is blocked, it will cause the engine to stall, and after a few seconds, the pressure in the tank will ease, and the engine will start again.

I had a similar problem with my one a few years ago – the last time it stopped was between the chains of the Poole chain ferry! . After doing the same carb stripping etc I turned my attention to the fuel tank and found the wire filter was blocked. To clean this, remove the tank and empty the fuel, then remove the tap / outlet pipe from the tank and clean it. I would flush out the tank at this point and check the fuel for water – this will give the same symptoms.
