Hi all, desperately need some help.

Had an outboard on eBay - someone bought it and came to collect it tonight.

Because I'd been running it in a bucket with a bin bag to line the bucket (leaks) I'd not dropped it into gear to avoid chewing up the bag.......

Stupid

Because it now won't drop in or out of gear - the selector seems to have seized.

Question is - is this something I might be able to free off myself - how hard is it to get to the mechanism, can I spray WD40 in there??

Basically they turned it down (understandably) and I am now in a pickle.

I do not want to spend a lot on it as I am selling the motor - how can I get it fixed without taking it to a Yamaha dealer and giving them lots of beer tokens?

Thanks all

usually there is a gromit where the linkage goes into the lower leg.

on the rod is usually a rubber bellows. encourage some oil into the area and work the gear change and all will come free.

well it did with mine x2

also they wont go into gear if you have the tickover revs too high. If you have remotes and slow leaver is much above half the mechanism wont allow you to put into gear same with handle too high revs no gear change . honda 8 does same

I found on my 5hp the gear change shaft had swollen up causing a very hard gear change. Once I sussed it got a file to it job done no more problems.
Don't ask me why the plastic / nylon swells up !

Hi All,

I don't think it's the linkage down to the drive that's the problem.

The arm you pull on is absolutely solid - so that may bear out what mtb said.

How do I detatch this, and then free it off??

I'll try and post a pic or vid later if I can work out how

on a smaller yam the shaft is plastic/nylon and it swells ,there is probable a grease nipple just under the shaft, carful dont put tomuch force if thats the prob, plus gas, easitoil gently work it loose grease gun on the grease nipple to pressure some in if you can .
