Yachts With Engines In The Saloon

I am interested in the S&S 34 which I believe has its engine in the saloon.I am well built to say the least and the ease of access offered is a major factor in my next boat purchase.Does anyone know of similar boats with this engine location?
 
I've been on a Feeling 286 Special with the engine in the saloon (under the table). The propeller shaft emerged from the trailing edge of the keel.

Edit - not a similar boat though!
 
We chartered this Albin 79 a few years ago. Lovely boat to sail imho. Its engine was under the "forepeak" V berth, which was the forward part of the saloon.

I'm afraid this image of the saloon is upside down for some reason;

I chartered a 286 in the former Yugoslavia and that was where I first came across this layout.As you say though - not a similar boat!
 
My wife and I are hoping to live aboard our eventual purchase so the Albin looks a bit small for our needs.(We are neither of us small people! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

Just a thought, but while I quite like the idea, for stability reasons, of having an engine low down in the saloon, I wonder whether the noise/smell would ever be intrusive.
 
My Maxi 100 (as does the Maxi95) has the engine under the saloon table, absolutely fantastic to work on, its very well insulated and noise/ smells not a problem. my son is just over 6 feet tall and height also not a prob.
 
I've sailed in and helped do a complete engine change on an S&S 34.

No problems with noise or smell in the saloon.

Maintaining was a breeze, and getting one engine out and t'other in was a breeze.

2 scaffold planks and a bit of winch work, job done.

Lovely boats.
 
Seems sensible to have the heaviest item aboard near the middle of the boat.Most yachts have a table there anyway.

I used to have a 32' yacht similar to the S&S34 with the engine under the saloon table. The PO had wanted a big engine (for the size of the boat) because his mooring was in a shallow area and the big donk would allow him to push through the mud to get on and off his mooring at low tide.

Great location for access but downside was that the engine sat low in the bilge and any flooding meant a wet motor. Especaily a problem for the starter and generator which were on the underside of the motor. Also the long exhaust run meant it could get very hot inside with the hatches closed.
 
Yes, very well. Freestyle's engine is under the chart table seat visible at the lower right of this picture.

As well as the access from above for day to day access, there are removable panels one both sides and fore and aft. Changing the impellor can be done through the forward access panel in pitch darkness if necessary.
 
a freind of mine owned a dehler 38' van de stadt design which had its engine housed simmilarly beneath the table in the saloon well placed weight directly above the keel

The She 31 I looked over yesterday has the engine under a generous companionway step - great access when the whole box lifts off. A little further forward than many, but not "in the saloon".

Newer versions of the SS34 have the engine under the companionway. They are still in production or I should say reproduction in Australia with a few alterations in keel design and construction methods. Google will soon find their web site. Lot of older versions on the market here. Australia has more SS34's than any other country I believe. I would love to own one.
