My answer to all this ? Strongly scented furniture Polish. Only takes a few minutiae to spray over all wood. You can get ones that require very little rubbing.

I remember decades ago approaching a Mediterranean island from downwind and getting an aromatic smell of herbs. Maybe it was maquis. Very romantic, wasted on a male crew...

Yeah, you can't use wd40 coz no aerosol products permitted on board.

Not yachting but the motorboat is smelling of lemon cleaner and fresh linen at the moment. Ive spent most of the week fitting our new Combi Oven and hob and doing odd jobs so today the good lady told me to go away for the day (I went to Collections Citroën & DS ) and she scrubbed the place within an inch if its life and put in the new bedding she bought the other day.

Cabbage smells, diesel, peppermint on the alco chief engineers breath. Hot oil, exhaust fumes, sun tan lotion, Brut. all brings back those far away days
