Yacht Varnish - \"Not suitable for marine use!\"

I have made some internal fittings for my boat in "mahogany" (actually a similar hardwood, because real mahogany is hard to find) and want to varnish them. Went to B&Q where I had spotted International Yacht Varnish in both gloss and satin. Looked on the tins, and found both marked "Not suitable for floor or marine use." So there we have it "Yacht Varnish", so called, that is not for marine use. The question is, what should I use?

Same as me .... micro-pore for matt finish like handles / floors etc. - then they are non-slip ..... gloss for cosmetic stuff.

I use B&Q Yacht Varnish ..... "non-marine use" on many items .... on boat and off ........... seems to last about same as other varnish - which when all is said and done doesn't last long once UV / Salt etc. has had its way with it !!

Do their own, exterior-grade polyurethane varnish at about 60% of the International Not-fit-for-purpose stuff.

In the Med it lasts about 4 years, twice as much as the high-price International polyurethane.

If it is in a hard wearing area, I recommend a 2 pot varnish - Ultravar 2000

I discovered Sikkems Natural varnish last year - must get round to scraping off all the conventional glossy stuff. It's not hard, oily almost, goes on in any weather, can be touched up here and there, and gives a matt finish that looks excellent PROVIDED you don't want that old-fashioned shine - which eventually chips and has to be taken right back.

I'm a convert!

Micro-pore matt stain ....

Based on the breathing micro-pore paint technology ..... probably find Sikkens is a variant of it.

Basically it soaks into the wood and raises the grain for sanding and then recoat. Trick is to only give 2 coats or 3 thin ..... then when necessary a quick sand and recoat and its back again. None of that "orrible onion peel varnish coat.

Brand ? Well you can go Brand Name - Ronseal / Sikkens / "that scandanvian one I can never remember the name of ... at a price ..... or B&Q's ......... at far less ...

For Rubbing strakes ........... give it say 3 good coats .... and yer laughing !! It also normally has anti-mould / algae additive in it as well.

Ronseal exterior wood varnish. does what it says on the tin. mine lasted about four years. boat done in the same stuff by a guy who knew what he was doing (painter and decorator)still looks good at the same age.

Day before Yarmouth May do .... I spent ages ... all of 1/2 hour doing just that on my hand-rails on cabin top !!

Rubbing strake was done year I bought her !! And that's quite a while now !

Ignore B&Q.

Go to your nearest chandlery and I would sugest you choose International 'Original'

Treat yourself to 2 or 3 coatsof this (rubbing down between coats) and if you want a deep satin or matt go for a final coat of Epifanes 'Rubbed Finish'.

The results are superb.

It's a bit like the botle of baby shampoo I bought last week that says "Warning, keep out of reach of children"!

Anyway, I gave up on International's so-called "yacht varnish" and went over to Ronseal's exterior stuff. I'm very happy with the cost / durability compromise.

I don\'t have as much time with boat as you ......

Steve .... somne of us only see our boat for a few measly days a year !! Poor ol'girl - considering the lack of attention - she does very well fo herself.

You'll upset her talking about her like that .....

Anyway - I hope to have her out of water later and then give her a clean up ready for the baltic trek ..... YEh Yeh I know - been atlking about it for 2 years now ... I can't help it if work gets in the way !!

Sorted out drying out to the wall yet ??

I agree with macor-Ronseal Outdoors! Not a traditional varnish but it seems to last well; above the average.

My two pennies: never used two-pack varnish, but among the others I've tried is International, Sikkens, and even Coelan, when I had money to spare (..?..) . But I found nothing that lasts as long as "Le Tonkinois"....excuse my French!
