I wonder what the full story was. What prevented the lifeboat getting to him in time to haul him out to sea? On the video it looks as though there was a bit of breeze and he had his sails up. I wonder if we'll hear more. Nothing on YBW yet.

In the video it looks like there was plenty of wind to sail off what was apparently a lee shore and he obviously had the sails up . . . I wonder why it happened.
[/ QUOTE ] Hard to believe that he didn't have a GPS on board or at least enough common sense to consult a chart and sail away from the shore rather than straight into it - or an echo sounder . . . .
(There appears to have been plenty of wind).
There must be more to it than that - he was an experienced sailor.
I was crewing a 44ft raggie on a delivery trip from Hayling to Plymouth on Sat night. Enough wind at all times (even if a bit variable in direction and strength) to take you off a leeshore - if you knew exactly where you were and where you needed to go.
The duty watch on the Lyme Bay stint heard the MAYDAY, and the co-ordinated response from sea and land services who were v quickly on the spot.
The nearest we got to any trouble was a bit later on my watch, getting within 3 miles of an anchored tanker (Toriana, 115k dwt) whose OOW was in VHF contact, asking us to give him at least a mile clearance, and suggesting a course which would help us achieve that objective. Plotting radar and MARPA is wonderful stuff !
It's easy to be wise after some else's mishap, but if gps failed (Dead Reckoning?), echosounder too (so hand lead?) why didn't he just anchor? You hear waves lapping on the beach in a calm, so pounding on rocks in strong winds . .
it really would be helpful to know more when Lyme Regis to West Bay (Bridport) is only 7 miles!
I think he just got lost in the mist and variable winds of the night, and carried on from an assumed and unconfirmed DR. He was clearly under full plain sail when he struck.
I agree, under those conditions, if in doubt, anchor, and check depths etc.
Not familar with the area but does it shelve prior to the rocks.
Certainly in areas that i have experience od Croatia and Greece is deep up to when you hit the rocks and certainly the charter boats I sailed in those areas there was not enought chain/rope to effectively anchor jusy off the rocks.
He's from Norwich, was sailing from Lyme Regis to West Bay - so going East, heading around UK.
I wonder where he started from?
I would have thought he should have been heading West.

I feel very sorry for him in most respects as he's obviously not a beginner and has paid quite heavily for making a bad call...or not making a call to RNLI quickly enough.
I do scratch my head a bit to learn he was uninsured though. Maybe he had third party cover, but even so. How many of you would set out to sea with your yacht uninsured against loss, particularly if you have savings on board to get you round the UK? I certainly would not.

Like many recent retirees, they have probably got severe financial problems that they could not have anticipated last June. No interest, and it would be frankly stupid to convert your pension pot to an annuity at this stage. So he was probably trying to go on with his dream - but was desperately short of money.
