I was crewing on a Class 40 in this race. Beautiful warm, sunny conditions and glorious moonlit night but once about 15 miles off the Needles there was bugger all breeze. Kept the fleet fairly close together though and did make for some wonderful views of the fleet.

When I were young , before all this tech stuff, the coastguard used to spend the night on vhf giving nav warnings about 200 boats sailing north to south IOW to Casquets. I always thought they should have added something like " and two going east". which would got a few navigators out of their bunks.

Some very enjoyable nights on that race. And a few good meals at the end.
