Yacht or motor boat to live on..advice for newbie?

What an excellent thread. I am in a similar circumstance to you when you started out a year ago... amazingly similar in all respects!

I've learned a lot reading your thread and people's replies / advice.

Keep posting. I'm really interested to know how the winter effects you!

If you are in Preston, you possible could meet up with Nathanlee as he started out three years ago and is now up at Preston having sailed from St Kats, London.

You can also read his blog:

www.onkudu.com

If you are down this way, you would be welcome onboard to 'see what it is really like' to live afloat? :)

Hi there,

I've read this thread from start to finish and I found it exhilarating!!!

It's something that I'm thinking of doing and trying to moor up somewhere in Gosport, Llike you JB I'll start off with something around 22"-30".

What'd you say that your monthly expenses are nowadays roughly?

Again this and the thread by Zanziba have been so helpful!

Thanks,

Ninpo

Brilliant posts

Hi there- I've been on the forum for a while now but only read these posts tonight and they are great. I've tried to post previously on here, but for some reason they never appear!
I am in similar circumstances, not marriage-wise (no-one would be that silly) but life-wise. I live on the South-Coast so should have sorted out my sailing life way before now..having been here for two summers- doh! Anyway, long story short, I got made redundant last week, but should get a payout that should allow me to buy a boat around the £15k mark & have some left over for those inevitable repairs/extras- I am then looking to work freelance as a copywriter (ignore any mistakes here- I've had 2 big glasses of red!) Like you, my sailing experience is next to nil, so if anyone is going out in Hampshire/Dorset over the next few weeks... (I have time on my hands).. to just get some experience so that I could do a winter Day Skipper course would be great.. then look at buying a boat to live on in the UK over winter & who knows where beyond that.
Thanks very much for these very informative posts everyone- they make me realise that foolish dreams may be foolish but can be realised..
Just wondering how the boxer dog will take to sailing...

Why not look at boats that are insulated such as the Sadler range of yachts?
The 29 should come in at that price range.

Hi Jim.

Best of luck - I'm ex job and now spend as much of my time on board as possible. Can I throw in another option. A motor sailor - I have a Colvic Atlanta 31 motor sailor, I can sail her single handed and has bags of room, incl headroom. My daughter describes her as having an ensuite bedroom, a lounge diner, a conservatory and a patio. She may not be fully au fait with the nautical terminology. But I have had some fantastic times on board.

Good luck !!

David

PM me for any other info

Lakesailor - you are right !

I got so carried away trawling the forum for something else and came across J thread. It was so interesting I totally missed the date !!

How is he, has sorted everything out?

regards

David
