I'm sure this has been done to death, however. Which companies are giving best recent quotes/terms for sailing vessel insurance,
Boat British registered and in UK.

Thank you

Noble Marine Ltd offer me a low premium for comprehensive cover and they don't need a survey.

British - registered sailing yacht, kept in France.

Only way o find out is to get quotes specific to you. You can get quotes on line which will give you the range, but be sure to read the policy to be sure you are comparing like with like. I am with HKJ which is underwritten by Amlin as are several others but there is a lot of choice and TBH the "best" for one person's situation may not be the best for you.

For 3rd party and wreck removal,Basic Boat Insurance charged me £120 (ish - cannot remember the exact figure). Although it restricts me to 12NM from the coast. That won't matter this year but I expect I will need something more next year.

Hi, thank you for your reply, it suggests I might be missing something, the online quote engines seem quite generic, size, age and value, the cruising areas also, the furthest I'll be going in this particular vessel is UK coastal may be CI and French coast. Is a conversation worth the time waiting on the phone ?

Thanks again.

Yes, they are generic - because by and large policies are! Does not mean that premiums from different insurers are the same, though. It is at the margins where you can get wide variations - for example old or unusual boats, high value boats, extended cruising areas where insurers are more picky and require more detailed information. The things that affect individual premiums are claims record (typically 20-25% discount) and location of mooring - 10-15% for recognised marina berth. The vast majority of claims are for theft and damage from the elements so you find that things related to actual sailing - qualifications, amount of time spent actually sailing have little or no impact on premiums - unless you are going offshore cruising for example.

So the generic questions - type of boat, age (surveys generally needed over 20 years), value and location of mooring and past claims are the ones that determine premiums. The premium itself is in 2 parts - third party which is largely fixed at around £150-200 and all risks hull and machinery which is broadly related to value insured. To give you an idea, I have just changed boats from a fairly new £100k one to a 45 year old currently valued at £15k. The premium for the former was just under £500 and the latter £320. Both marina based and with maximum no claims. In relation to value expensive newish boats are cheaper to insure than low value old boats!

We have used Admiral and found them admirable. One claim met without quibble, and very helpful when we have extended territory.

It depends a lot on what sort of cover you want.
ie Territorial Limits, Type of mooring, Location of Mooring to name but a few.
Some companies weigh certain criteria higher than others.

We found problems last October with fewer underwriters covering boats on moorings 365 days in EU. Ended up with N & G via Topsail, Amlin would only renew as third party without wreck or pollution, although we'd had comprehensive with them for several years without any claims.

Hi All,
To wrap this post up, firstly thank you for your replies.

I contacted all suggestions apart from Noble marine, no reason they just got missed and I may try them on Monday.
Quotes varied between £430 and £660, Admiral not inclined to quote.

Quite a variation but not surprising, I guess you have to do the leg work.
