Yacht Coding In Spain

Yes; doing it right now - almost completed!

First: Is your vessel British registered? If so then she must be on part 1 of the register, referenced on ORIGINAL/new paperwork from MCA as a commerical vessel, She must be UK coded for charter before Spanish inspection.

Let me know and we'll see what further info I can provide.

As Steve said its UK code first, I did all the work to get my boat coded a couple of years ago, Its worth getting a copy of the code and reading it before you start paying someone to asses the boat. You'll then understand whats needed.

Most of the work required is easy DIY stuff, and then you are completely prepared when you have your visit from whoever will sign it off, you can even disguss interpretation of some aspects of what is required. In several areas there is more than one way to comply. From what I've seen some companies that offer to do the work required for coding take the simple options and not the cheapest or best.

It took me 6 days to get the work done and coded before we headed West.

Just interested - does this mean that you cannot charter a British coded yacht in Spain and it must be coded by the Spanish?

For UK registered vessels you have to have mca blue code (yachts up to 24m) but part of the code, looks it up.....part 1.14 is:
Compliance with the code in no way obviates the need for vessels and /or skippers to comply with local authority licencing requirements where applicable.

If you're based abroad you are subject to Rules, Regulations and examination by the administration of the country from which you operate.

It usually states this in your insurance as well.

I think that the mca code genarally exceeds most other local requirements, so there shouldn't be much more work required.

On my boat and with my insurance if I had chartered it out in spain with just the MCA codeing I would not have been insured. If I'd chartered her out of Falmouth on route to Canaries then it would have been classed as working out of UK.

At least thats how I read it and didn't want to fall foul of any local authorities.
