We went in April in Phuket area and had a great time. The time of year is important / in April it was between monsoons and winds were light. Thunderstorms from tail end of rainy season spectacular. In 08 we were at anchor - no marinas. People incredibly friendly - the difference to Caribbean is incredible. Instead of 10 dollars to “watch” your dinghy we had people helping carry our rib a long way up the beach and refusing to accept any money. It was a holiday of a lifetime for us. Amazing place

We chartered out of `Phuket a couple of years ago. Amazing place to charter. I would recommend you concentrate on the South as opposed to the North. We also chartered in April (my birthday) but I wish we had done it in February as April is incredibly humid.

I have written a blog entry summarising our experiences of our charter: http://genesisbeneteaufirst26.blogspot.com/2015/04/

PS If you can afford a boat with air-conditioning or a catamaran, go for it!

Chartered a Bavaria 33 through Top Yacht (www.top-yacht.com) out of Phuket three years back and had a great time, can recommend them and also the Phang Nga bay area behind Phuket. As other posters suggest, time of year is crucial. We went early February which is perhaps the best time, but of course attracts the highest costs.

Apologies for recovering old post but wondering any recently thoughts on Thai charters . Looking around lots of cats seem to be about but are these as essential as in Caribbean ? Which area is now quiet as the national park seems gunfight?
