Experienced - have Coastal Skipper + the hours but rusty. Just two of us.

You will need an ICC and a VHF certificate.

I recommend this site: http://www.sailingissues.com/
There's a lot of information there, and you can register your requirements and they will send through some yacht charter offers from companies that operate in the area you're interested in. They don't charter yachts directly, they claim to deal with reputable companies only.

There's also JimBSail's site which has a lot of useful stuff in it: http://www.jimbsail.info/mediterranean/greece

I found a lot of variation over whether a dinghy, outboard or cleaning is included in the price.

Bareboat - dunno somewhere quiet.

Ionian quite in weather terms but can be a bit manic in high season, although avoiding ports when flotillas are in you can usually find quiet anchorages. Recommendations in Corfu Bobs Yachts www.bobsyachts.gr and in Levkas Sail Ionian. Both British owned and rune and with good reputation for clean boats and personal service. Competitive with the big operators.

I've use Nautilus a couple of times for bareboat: Friendly, efficient and prepared to do a deal for last minute (which is invariably what I used to end up doing). latesail isn't all last minute stuff: might be worth a look (especially if you fancy doing a one-way somewhere).

Just a thought though...My partner and I have a 12m boat because we live on it and I have plans to cross oceans with it. For a med holiday with just 2 though I much prefer something 10m or less: much cheaper, easy to single-hand, trivial to park, slips into smaller gaps..all round less stress. Most people aren't trying to cover much ground on a couple of weeks' holiday and don't have much gear to stow, but you can still cover some respectable distance on a 30-footer if you're determined.

Have a look at www.latesail.com they deal with all the major and medium sized charter companies with boats available on the mainland and many of the islands. Look out for the 'Name your price'' page but don't make a silly offer. The one Greek charter company that gets a lot of complaints is Kiriacoulis, they are the cheapest but the boats are all very old and I would avoid them. If you need to know anything else let me know, Jane and I have sailed from the North, the Halkidiki peninsulas, to South, Pelopponese peninsulas and the Ionian.

There are many cheap one way charters in Greece but make sure it's north to south unless you love upwind sailing. They are on a different URL wiih a link on the LateSail site which is: www.sailoneway.com/?c=uk

Do you have evidence to back that accusation up? Suggest one of the reasons why it gets more complaints than others is that it runs more boats than any others. Boats are certainly NOT old although the average age is probably older than it was 10 years ago. That is true of most operators as the recession has slowed demand and replacement programmes.

Not evidence beyond personal experience - we've chartered a few. They were all old although we knew that when we booked. They were ok until the last one - which was supposed to be newer and better. we got a skippered charter because the kids were 3 and 1 and we wanted another pair of hands. Asked for a skipper who could help coach my wife in wind awareness and helming under sail. Got a useless skipper who treated me as his crew and insisted in marinas only. and the rudder had no feel it acted as if you were in reverse when going ahead - could not hold it in centre always flipping one way or other. Horrible horrible boat to sail. Skipper says what do you expect most people dont use sails just stick it n autopilot. Complained to nautilus who we booked with really just to be acknowledged but they were very defensive and said you're not getting a refund (hadn't asked for one). So no more business for nautilus or kiriacoulis after that. That was Croatia in 2012 - we had better luck in Greece, south of France and Sicily in 2008-2011.

In Greece I can't fault sailing holidays. Not chartered with them but our boat was in gouvia for a few years and we saw the maintenance schedule and got to know some of the team. Well looked after boats. The Ionian is quieter if you avoid flot crews and go in the shoulder seasons.

I'm afraid that was not our experience with a delivery flotilla from there towards the Sporades (though we only went as far as Lavrion). A number of yachts had "teething" problems which had not been sorted by staff at Gouvia and which delayed us in the Ionian. But we did get some money back from Sailing Holidays for loss of enjoyment.

Any advice - suggestions - recommended companies ?

Thanks in advance

Sail Ionian.

All the boats under three years old. Superb service.

Bays, Nooks and crannies all over the place in the Ionian so you should never have to share a bay with another boat, unless you want to.

I'd second Sail Ionian as a good company but my experience of the Ionian in summer has been that it's a bit crowded. Maybe I didn't go to the right places though.

I'd also suggest Greek Sails in Poros. The Argolic is pretty quiet all year and not far to get to from there.

If we need additional boats we always use Athenian Yachting, the Jeanneau agent. They have bases all over Greece, we've always found their boats to be in good condition, and they normally do an excellent handover. Probably not the cheapest company but you often get what you pay for, don't you?

PM me with your dates and I'll let you know if any of our boats are free. It saves you a day sailing to/from the mainland if you start here but we don't always have anything available.
