Ok I must be the slowest boat buyer in the world! But can you blame me when the boat has been so neglected over so many years?

Where am i?

Engines checked by Cat engineer and given the thumbs up! Although some work is needed it is not a show stopper, Surveyor spend all day yesterday going through the boat, great build, good hull, very tidy electric wiring, all fittings are SS, No damp or leaks in cabins, All electric, generator is good(made by G&M with a Volvo engine),Fridge freezer all working,

Now the bad bits: Leaking windows in upper bit of boat (large windows),Teak deck on back deck above lazartte in need of love, one engine control sticking(need more investigation )all navigation equipment is very old and unused.

The main problem has been is that the owner refuses to go out for a sea trial, so we are trying to check as much stuff as possible on berth, Ran the engines for over two hours just to get them warmed up! Also engage gears in moorings just to see that gearboxes are ok?

Hard work but I try and push forward,

Very tired Tom

If you are totally happy with what you have seen, I am not sure if you have had a professional survey.

Give him a final offer:

subject to a sucessful sea trial of no less than one hour

Subject to a full survey out of the water at your expense

Subject to the boat being clear of all debts and liens

Unless the price is an absolute steal if he refuses walk away.

By the way pretty well all old boat windows leak unless they have been stripped re sealed and bedded again.

A the WWW46 is good looking boat though.

Gald to here you are still progressing Tom. Sounds like you may be the person to rescue this lady and actually put her to use.

Navigation electronics always need updating, and the cost is not huge now with plotters and RADAR falling in price all the time. The CAT engineers report sounds positive and the other issues don't sound too bad for a boat of theis age.

Keep us updated, hope it works out.

Are you still going after the Westerly Whitewater 46, Their was one for sale with euroyachts in Largs for a long time it was eventually sold to the present owner who keeps it at holy loch marina for £90,000. He was a ships engineer who bought it I had a look around it was very impressed with the cat engines they were in mint condition. He had a few issues with it ie cracked front windscreen caused by the hull flexing when it has been lifted and damp around a couple of port holes.A lot of boat for the money it might be worth you giving holy loch marina a ring and see if they would pass your details to him and ask if he could ring you as I am sure he would have good knowledge of what to look out for.

If that's the worst of it, then I would be quite optimistic especially if the Cats are sound. Owner sounds like a bit of a twat but it looks like it's worth persevering with if the price is right

Yes, the surveyor quite liked the boat and the build quality, the boat is coming out of the water on Friday and if all is well I will fly the forum flag from the Flybridge for all to see, and maybe crack a bottle of bubbly.
It has a very long saga but at least I know I am getting the boat I really want !

Well Done Tom,

I applaud your perseveranceon this. They are big boats, and if finished right can be great. I bet you will have many happy hours and days cruising ahead.

Cheers and Fingers crossed

All the downsides are fairly minor except for the owner refusing the sea trial. That would set so many alarm bells ringing for me that i'd walk away. Your surveyors reports, however positive, will be littered with caveats, so no come back on them if the boat flexes the first time you hit a wave and you find the stringers are coming away in an area not accessible to the surveyor.

If you like the boat and the price, then maybe finish the current survey work and then agree to buy the boat subject to a sea trial with rejection limited to major structural or drivetrain problems identified by the surveyor

Thanks Paul,

Also thanks for the find tom a boat campigan which you ran for a long time which really helped me to make the right choice , Its the only boat with 3 cabins and all electric in the right size which ican afford to buy and run.
