The negotiations on the boat I was looking at haven't gone to plan.

Basically all the things in the old survey that were supposed to be fixed are not- the DTronic engine it turns out as a 220hp is NOT a DTronic, the Diesel Heater is cheap, chinese and doesn't work.... etc etc.. you get the idea.......

I have seen and spoken to someone looking to sell a Crownline 242CR which appears a nice boat (Not been to see it yet).

What are general thoughts on this boat - fitted with a DTronic 250hp engine from 2002 (so re-engined I think) so I think the boat is about 2400-2700kg so should go well enough with a 250hp in it, and seems quite well equipped with Eberspaecher heating Bowthruster, Shore Power etc etc....

Doesn't have a Plotter, Windlass or rear sunbed so needs a little bit spending on it - hopefully I can get the price to where I want it....

But overall - Crownline - I understand they are a bit better made than the Bayliner / Maxum type boats, probably more like the SeaRay / Chapparal / Four Winns type boats? Are they ok in a seaway or are they more lake boats?

Anyone owned one? Are they any good or are they "run a mile" boats?

Thank you

Not a crownline but i had a similar searay 240 sundancer .

I would stay away from diesels at all on that size .
The us trailarable "pocketcruisers" are all assheavy by default . Now put there a 4.2 diesel inside and you will probably fight hard with trim all the time .

A 5.0 mpi or 350mag petrol will do the right job here and you will never cruise enough to balance the way higher maintanance and parts costs of a diesel with the fuel savings.

It’s not for that - where I intend to cruise I cannot get waterside petrol so filling from jerrycans just gets tiresome… having run an (admittedly old) 5.7 carb motor that would burn £200 in a few hrs cruising I swore to myself that I’d never go petrol again.

Obviously the very modern outboards have changed that view somewhat but these style boats still all have stern drive - unless someone can convince me otherwise I wouldn’t touch a petrol sterndrive again - I have looked at the fuel burn for a 5.7GXI and it’s 10.5 us Gal /hr at 3000 rpm & 23.6 gal/hr flat out (which is 40 lit / 90 lit /hr) - waterside (if you can get it) that’s about £80-180 / hr which is a lot to me… plus resale of the petrols seems difficult.

The 320hp Mercruiser diesel does 7.9 gal/ hr at 3000rpm and 18.8 gal/hr at 3800rpm - so at £1.3 per litre represents £40 at 3000 rpm and £92 per hr flat out - which is a lot more palatable!!

Is the servicing of the petrol engine significantly cheaper than the servicing of the DTronic diesel?
