Whilst strolling around Sopromars yard here in Lagos yesterday, spied a large rib (c. 30ft?) with FIVE 250hp Honda outboards strapped to the stern, (thats 1250hp if my maths is correct). Looked vaguely military / police like, but I bet it goes like the clappers!!. If I am down in the next few days and it is still there I will photograph to prove not the product of too much alcohol / sun.

wow! the weight of 5 honda's must be something! i remember seeing a sports fisher with 4 Verado 350's on in Miami which went like stink!!!

I guess when they are using them to cross from North Africa redundancy is important!!!

One of my ships picked up a 9 meter Tornado rib some years ago with 3 x 250 Yam 2 strokes on. it was clearly used for one thing only and had been abandoned en route. they got clearance from the coastguard that it was "clean" and loaded it on board.

there was a blockage in the fuel line on 1 engine and our guess was they were concerned that they wouldnt be able to maintain speed and dumped the cargo and boat! half an hour tinkering by the chief engineer and it was running again!

they discharged it in Germany and i believe it sat on the quay for 18 months while the paperwork issues were sorted out!

I thought i read somewhere that the HP on multiple engines doesnt equate to what a dual drive engine would be... twin 650 HP onboards would be way more powerfull than the above and not by just 50 HP

I was referring to real time hp figures not drug runners. From what I have seen and read if money isn't an issue they will be in a turbine powered boat.

I'm sure it is - though I think the number of engines is down to redundancy, as Zippy says, rather than reliability, particularly if 2 or 3 of them get disabled by gunfire.... :)

I haven't heard of any gunfire on this coast but large ribs with several engines are abandoned frequently - both crew and cargo having disappeared.
