Who in Scotland would you get to do a significant refit and tart-up on an old wooden boat? (Launched 1965. She is in fairly good condition and has been sailing every season for the last 20 years.)

What is your budget?

£00's
£000's
£0000's
Or
£00000's

Fairly good condition is not helpful.
Teak?
Mahogany?
Ply?

Too many variables. You might want a years work done by Silvers or a touch up and sail by Chris Inge or John S Hill in Johnstone.

Not used them myself, but I "follow" Ardfern Boat Building on Instagram to ogle some classics - some of the work he puts up is really impressive.

wooden boat builder: wooden boat: boat repairs: Traditional Wooden Boatbuilders and Classic Yachts : A and R Way Boatbuilding

Adam Way did a lot of the wood interior work on my GRP boat, you can see examples of his work in Post #64 Plastic classics?

They specialise in wooden boat building and fit out, also have a very full order book. I have them booked for a new saloon table next month. I would recommend them.

Silvers, Ardfern, Crinan Boats all do stuff like this as well. I would recommend A&R Way as the owner specialises in wooden boats and travels to boat locations.

As I said, the boat is in good condition. She is a larch on oak clinker hull. Some of the brightwork in mahogany, the transom is teak and the cap rails are Iroko - new 7 years ago.. The hull was stripped to the bare wood two years ago and all defects discovered repaired, The combings were extensively repaired to renew all rotted sections three years ago. The wooden mast had its seams remade 4 years ago. Keel bolts drawn 3 years ago. Cabin windows replaced four years ago. The deck and cabin tops were renewed 18 years ago. Their day will come, but it is not planned to renew them this time. Rudder refurbished and hangings replaced last year. There is a small known patch of rot in the deck on one quarter which may reveal more after exploratory surgery. It has not caused any rot to the planking, and there is some hope that the teak in the transom will have got off lightly. There is a large build-up of old paint around the cockpit and cabin, which needs stripping and sorting. What work I get done will depend on how much the chosen yard can do in one winter. I want to be sailing in the summer. If I find the right yard but have to wait a year I might well accept that. I'm not planning to throw silly money at her, but in the last 20 years this boat has had much more than ten times her value spent on her (silly money?), so I understand the pain I'm inviting here only too well.

I thought she was in remarkably fine condition when I went sailing on her last week! A beautiful boat, and a worthy obsession.

My good friend Darren of Mainsail Marine says Adam Way is definitely the man to go to in these parts when it comes to wooden boats and craftsmanship.

Having watched Adam working I would heartily second BoBs recommendation, if he takes your job on you get the owner of the business. He spent two winters outdoors here in Ardrishaig Basin replacing planks on one of those converted fishing boats that operate as West Coast cruisers in summer,I suspect his overheads may be quite a bit lower than some of the other yards mentioned but certainly not his skill.
You are in an area where boatbuilding craftsmanship is stronger than most.

As well as his workshop in Lochgilphead, Adam leases the Scottish Canals yard at Cairnbaan beside wher he lives, he has a big crane coming in a couple of week to lift the boats that winter there, 14-15th. Oct. so if you need to come out that should be cheaper than an individual craning, he launches again mid April. He has access to a local crane if his dates do not suit.

Silvers stopped doing anything other than storage well before the plague.

That’s not true. I put my boat in Silvers for work, GRP repair and stainless welding. All completed to a high standard. I got my boat back at the first easing of lock down.

While I was there, inside their shed, there was clearly other works underway. The trade that did my GRP was contracted in. In that respect, perhaps you are correct, trade labour is not resourced from staff positions.

There is small yard up at Ullapool run by a couple of guys, who have a good reputation, but the cost is likely to be ££££££s.

Sounds like Tim Loftus and a colleague of his. If you are in that area it would certainly be worth a look. He built his own wooden boat some time ago. The yard is getting some heritage work. If you want more information I can ask his father who is a friend and neighbour at the end of the week.

Thanks to everyone for all the input. I have spoken to Adam as he got lots of votes both here and on Facebook. This will probably be a job for next winter not this - certainly if he does it.
