Woops, i made the news!

Single handed i was knackered after a long passage , pitch black so did tide calcs and decided punching current was pointless. Divereted into Barry which i know well (all looks different at night and all you want to do is sleep) Luckilly i left nav lights on and woke up at 40 degree angle with the life boat shouting at my yacht at 2 ish in the morning! Reason anchor dragged is the windlass jammed so i used second anchor without chain.
Many thanks to RNLI, i don't feel as guilty as i think they were out anyway....report here=

Barry Dock lifeboat called to stranded boat

The volunteer crew of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s Barry Dock lifeboat were called into action at 2am this morning (Monday 4 July).

A 30-foot boat got into difficulty when its anchor was unable to hold position near the Bendrick Rock just east of the Barry Harbour entrance.

The boat, with one person on board, eventually grounded on the rock.

The Barry Dock lifeboat and its ‘boarding’ boat approached the area and was able to standby until the tide changed and the stricken boat was able to refloat.

The lifeboat boarding boat crew were satisfied that no damage had compromised the integrity of the stranded boat and that it was able to sail onto its next destination.

Good job the rock saved you, you could have drifted safely out to sea.


Fair do's that they stood by until you refloated, starting from a 40deg angle that must have been a couple of hours. They won't be much use back at their proper jobs today I suspect.

Reminds me of the time when coming down the Thames, for similar reasons, I anchored in Holehaven - more of a hole than a haven.

Woke up for a pee and looked out to find myself (unlit of course) drifting between two of the oil terminal jetties where a couple of tugs were manoevering a tanker about.

Anchored at low tide and probably not enough scope for the tidal rise there.

More likely had been in the sailing club bar 'til well after midnight. They do a good 'lock-in' there.....

Guess the winds must be different on the south wales coast at night?
At that time my log shows reaching with cruising chute out of Portsmouth midday, west, motor on/foul tide at 9pm at Portland, southerlies light till 3am then SE4, 1 reef, quick sailing, into Dartmuff at 0620. Catnaps 20 mins all night in the cockpit seemed enough that time, not always so.

Not sure I would want to anchor off Barry in a southerly component wind but as the OP says, he knows it better.
