Hi All,

This is my first posting in the Classic area so apologies for my lack of knowledge.
I have a Freeman 30 with a GRP hull but Wooden Deck / Superstructure..
I need to replace half a section of wood which is a vertical beam that runs up the side of the wheelshelter. It is a highly polished piece much like the interior wood.
Basically i'm learning about wood as i go here but can anyone offer any pointers on how to identify the type of wood, and any suggestions on where to source this kind of wood etc.
I live on the Essex coast.

Many thanks,

Nick

hi nick, fill in your profile mate.

if it 's the boat i think it is it's probably mahogany, easy to work with, but unless your good with wood, get a decent chippie to identify it and scarf a piece in. check your local directory to find a timber importer, ask them who, in the are uses that type of timber. you may be able to pick up some that'll match pretty well. also you say highly polished? the best finish i can get is by using 1 coat epoxy, followed by 2 coats of yacht varnish.. rubbing down between coats.

hope this helps. steve.
