Wonder why it didn't catch on! #3

Actually a guy did this with a catamaran in the late 80's. The wind 'propellor' was connected by gearing to a central conventional prop and as the wind turned the 'vane' so the boat moved. He could do 6kts but directly into the wind! He did it as I recall as an experiment to prove the technology for his company which was UGS or something like taht based in the renoved old warehouse on the Chelmer Canal at Maldon. Used to see it out on the Blackwater. Neat bit of kit. Tight in locks though!
 
I think you can see a boat rigged like that in Irvine. Certainly was one as part of the Scottish Maritime Museum fleet about 8 years ago.
