Open flies doesn't necessarily mean you were peeing.

You just might have forgotten to zip them up (sailor aged 66)

So that stat is flawed IMO.

Not over the side, I have an old plastic mug that lives in the cockpit when solo. Like Seashoreman I have seen the RNLI stats for open flies.

You can prove pretty much anything using statistics.
Been doing it for over 20 years. Statistically speaking, I suppose I shouldn't even be alive.

One death from peeing is enough for me to heed the warning.

With such a mindset, you shouldn't do anything for fear that it might kill you.

Please excuse the (minor) rant, but this sort of risk averse, H&S inspired attitude towards life really gets my goat.
If I had sat down to carefully considered the risks of everything I wouldn't have done more than half the stuff I have done in life - and regretted not doing them.

Yep - there's a risk to everything.

This is a memorial to a young solo sailor who was lost approaching Madeira in '92.

His yacht, apparently, more or less sailed itself into the harbour at Funchal. We were berthed there in May '94 when his friends arrived to sail his boat home and the hand-painted plaque is their memorial.

I find it poignant even now.



They'll never know if his flies were undone.

Clearly mistakes were made on both vessels and lessons are there to be learnt but let's do it in the normal spirit of the ECF 'cos it's starting to sound a bit like the Lounge in here at the moment

Of course it was avoidable. Two sets of people made stupid but easy to do mistakes. Just like not noticing a motorcyclist when pulling out of a side turning or seeing through a vehicle with right of way on a roundabout.

Two people will now spend the rest of their lives saying "if only" and it will probably haunt them in the small hours of the night until they die.

Disagree. One takes seconds, the other minutes. However agree with Erbas that this is getting like the lounge so I wont post again on this subject. I don't go into the lounge often and when I do I remember why I don't go there often!

Given the delicacy of the subject, I think this thread has altogether been quite civilized.
