Marina Port Vell is the most popular and the most expensive. Security is good and public transport is excellent. Staff are good. Port Vell attracts very long-term liveaboards. Probably there are some here who can tell you more? I asked about a winter berth last week and I was told that there is a waiting list. They had no idea whether I could get in or not but they seemed very keen for me to put my name down. Read into that whatever. Staff speak perfect colloquial English and it is best to phone.

Port Vell is the most popular, but it is also usually full. Two years ago we were looking for a place in Barcelona and there was literally no room anywhere. Two of the marinas never returned our calls.

Eventually we wound up in Badalona, which is just up the coast and was almost brand new when we turned up. Cheaper than the city centre places, much better security and not too far from the city. There are regular buses from the marina either to San Adria ( 10 min) for the tram or the train or the other way to Badalona itself. The Metro is about 15 min walk from the marina. San Adria has a huge supermarket, Badalona itself has plenty of shops, cafes etc.

Not the prettiest of surroundings for the marina and the proposed hotel was still upcompleted, although there are plenty of restaurants and a chandlery. Staff very friendly and helpful. Resular patrols by marineros , entry to pontoons and toilet / showers is by swipe card. Fuel berth and marine engineer in the fishing quay. We were not living aboard , so can't speak for social life, but there were quite afew liveaboards in there over the winter.

... to Sam's points above, I'm not sure if I would want to live aboard in Badalona, although it did grow on us. It may have developed further since we were there a couple of years ago.

We have some friends who managed to get a place at Real Club Náutico de Barcelona and I see they are actually advertising moorings on their website, http://www.rcnb.com/amarres.asp . I believe the security is not very good but you are in a good position in the city centre and can also hassle Port Vell every day in person until they find you a berth

Winter in Barcelona

I could recommend Port Forum Marina which is a little closer to Barcelona
than Badalona and near a tram line into the city centre. However it has a air height limit of 16.5 metres. The facilities are very good and the staff charming.
The location is a bit quiet but for living on board that can be attractive

We were in Port Vell last year and are going back this year. If you call Vell on a regular basis you might get better results than e-mailing them. Our neighbour last year just pitched up and stayed, not that I recommend that. We did not get many positive reports about Port Olympic last year! It's surrounded by party bars that go on till all hours.

The price seems very high, port vell always say they are full, even now, but with dozens of empty berths! I prefer port vell to all the others, although it is now getting ridiculously expensive, but where else can you have a city like Barcelona on your doorstep? You could also try St Carles, bit further south but a lot cheaper.
