I have bought this boat for 5.5K

I am planning to sail her this winter in the area and make some films about winter sailing in the west country before taking her up to Skye for next summer.

she is currently on a mooring at Falmouth

she can stay there until the end of October

Falmouth is lovely - but parking the car and dealing with dinghies would appear to be a bit of a challenge and for winter sailing I probably need a pontoon and some lekkie for the fan heater. I could rent a mooring and then run to a pontoon for the odd night - to dry the boat out - but it is dinghies in the dark are easily the most dangerous part of sailing for us old blokes

so a permanent pontoon for the winter will reduce my chances of falling into the icy water. I do love a drying pontoon though.

Jill and I went to this place -

https://www.mylor.com/

which is absolutely lovely

great birds, lovely showers, excellent walking/cycling. I really like the place

but six winter months is £1600 for the Centaur - which are well up to Solent prices

Any suggestions chaps?

Keep your eyes off the wimmin! esp if Jill is with you.

You should get a good price for the engine when you rip it out ............... easliy enough to buy one one those drones so that you can do some of the aerial video stuff.

Congrats on your boat !

Might be worth asking on the Liveaboard forum ?

I recall there was a chap living in Falmouth who posted a little while ago.

There used to be a lovely sheltered liveaboard spot, a real little community - by the Roseland peninsula I think ( a long time since I was there, sadly ) but even if they are still tolerated I really doubt mains electricity.

A cheap way would be to have a word with the Harbour Master and see if you can stay on that mooring or one near it, use the Fal Taxi to board ( very reliable and reasonable service). In the winter there are numerious pontoons and anchorages to stop for a night where you wont be troubled for money. Park in Arwenack Ave or nearby

I think I can get a winter mooring in Falmouth -

maybe parking is not that big a deal

I guess I was there in the summer so it seemed incredibly busy

it cost us £3.30 for three hours to park

I do have the folding bike

so I will not remove falmouth from the list

I have some time before committing myself

Pity you don't want Mylor. I have a mooring summer and berth winter. It's really the only way to do it, a couple of people stay on the moorings year round but that can be a challenge.
You can generally sail year round from there, I do.
Hope you can dig deep and stay at Mylor. Nice cosy pub with a log fire all winter at Castaways East on site.

I do want to overwinter at Mylor

It is far enough up the river to be peaceful on a bright clear cold October Morning when the mist is hanging

So the images will be fabulous

http://www.westerndailypress.co.uk/...309/Article/images/20952465/6007350-large.jpg

and the place is covered in boat porn - both ashore and afloat

http://intheboatshed.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/oyster-boats-2.jpg

the marina is interested enough in video as a way of self promotion to have had a crack at using it to promote themselves

https://www.youtube.com/user/MylorBoatyard/videos

this is their highest hitting video

1600 hits in a year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEqxWvSxpfY

this is 90 hits

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlQVPgMGtB0

6,000 views on their vids

the website is great and has controllable web cams

https://www.mylor.com/webcams-2/webcam-east/
which are always fun

I agree a winter berth would be ideal

we shall see if they think that some nice films of nice boats shot nicely on nice winter days might be quite nice

Apparently they have quite a few vacant berths in the winter

and I would have thought that if there was anywhere in the UK where you could get some good winter sailing then the Fal must surely be it

So, chaps, what would you like to see in a film that promoted winter sailing and would help marinas to increase their winter occupancy rate

promotional film about a marina trying to fill those vacant winter pontoon spaces

Just curious is all

I do want Mylor - it is fantastic

we shall see if Tristran Vivian thinks that some films about what a lovely place it is might be beneficial

do you know him at all

Yes of course, I'll be back down in a couple of days and have a word. Not sure I can change things but I'll give you a plug. ?

Falmouth, no problem with Dinghies Dylan as there are winter Dinghy berths on the Falmouth Water Sports boat park, See Falmouth Haven for prices. Parking is easy as there is a turnover of cars that park in town so always somewhere to park for free. Mooring for the boat would be about £300 for the winter, see falmouth haven again.
But if you want a berth connected to the shore then I expect you will have to pay, Mylor is very expensive and open to southerly and easterly winds together with being quite shallow there too, but for your boat its no problem.
Top of Penryn river has a marina which dries and close to the road which I think you might appreciate? Prices I am not sure of but a call will certainly confirm whether good value or not. There is Falmouth marina in penryn river also but prices there are the second most expensive in the UK apparently. Falmouth Haven have berths in Falmouth which no doubt they will give you a winter price but its very popular there in the winter and fills rapidly if not already booked.
Pendennis Marina beside the Museum is another choice and on par rice wise with all the others.
You cheapest option is a mooring in Falmouth with your dinghy in the boat park as mentioned earlier, from there you have all tide water.
Falmouth Haven staff are good and friendly and worth contacting.

You could doubtless do a deal with the Truro Harbourmaster and use one of the upriver midstream pontoons, no power though. My pick would be Malpas which has the Heron Inn, complete with nearby heronry, rich in Celtic folklore of Tristan and Isolde.

This would save a bit of driving, and you could park the car on the road there.

PS

Just looked on Google, there is a semi drying ashoreside pontoon there of which I know nothing.

you are right

that might be worth investigating

for the sake of the camera and the acoustic it would be good to find somewhere a distance from the road

it does seem that there are quite a few options

thanks doug

Congrats on the boat Dylan looks a cracker! Will be interested to hear your thoughts on the inmast furling system.

Hi,
Harbour Authorities do really good deals on all types of moorings over winter for six months. Or why not try a marina berth for six months. most boats taken out of the water, In Dartmouth £18 per meter per month with all mod cons.

Hi Dylan

my boat is moored at Pasco's boat yard, http://www.pascosboatyard.co.uk/ in St Just In Roseland

very beautiful and peaceful, all moorings have to be vacated end off October but they do have a tidal pool which is very reasonable for extended season. the pool is very protected and lots of folk around to keep a eye on her.

let me know if you to end up down there be nice to meet up.
