I am looking for somewhere in the Portsmouth area to haul out a 10m bilge keeler from say mid December for 3 months.

Power and water need to be available for the odd bit of maintenance, and it is preferable that the site is secure.

I have tried GBY ( I am moored at Haslar) and they have put me on the waiting list. Other suggestions welcomed as I am still getting used to things down here and the idea that hard standing space is hard to find at any time of year comes as a surprise.

Thanks in advance

Max

I laid up at Wicormarine for 3 yrs (Fareham reach). They were OK, a bit eccentric in some ways, although I did get burgled one winter. They've got all you want though.

We've got the same problem - last year ended up whipping around to Moody's for a couple of months - excellent facilities and service and not overly expensive (compared to what you might think).

HYC not eccentric?

I beg to differ (actually I misread the post, I thought you'd said minus the electricity).

Shouldn't put you off though, and there's a good diesel mechanic and a stainless steel welder on site.

Re: HYC not eccentric?

Not as eccentric as Wicor .........

I have my boat in HYCo and they are very good ...... bit slow sometimes to get things done ..... but yard is reasonable ...

You have Mast builders, Boat Builders, Engineers, Outboard Service / Sales etc. on site .......

Moorings are tidal +2/-2 on tide, inner suited to bilge / lifting, outer for long / fins ........

First impression - scruffy, second is you stay there !!!!

Re: HYC not eccentric?

Sorry Nigel, I didn't mean to imply they are not any good. I've had a swinging mooring there since 1987 and don't intend moving, its just that life is rarely dull, in a nice sort of way, and it's a lovely quiet spot. Incidentally I get access to the mooring at HW +/- 3.5 to 4 hours, both in the dinghy from the yard and in from the harbour (draught 4'2"), most of the time. Are you on the pontoons?

Maybe you're never there at full moon?

After 2+ years there, things are v.scruffy but bearable until you try to have work done or your boat moved. Then from my exp. & that of others things can/do go sour, esp. if you dare to complain.

Re: Winter haul out in the Portsmouth area - sugge

Try Southsea marina-I found their prices competitive and they are generally quite
friendly. Site is secure and has electricity and chandlery.

Re: HYC not eccentric?

Yep ..... B pontoon ... about 1/2 way down.

Trouble is I don't spend enough time with the boat and also have an indirect electric supply ... but they are kind enough to give me a bit of leeway on it seeing as I am mostly abroad etc. They move the boat, they look after various bits and bobs while I'm away so generally I don't complain. Price is not as high as others - so .......

I have a good relationship with Richard the son etc. so again I'm ok with it. The only complaint I have and it applies to most marinas ..... why do they insist on using unstable fingers ..... I have been in the past rep for pontoons in Baltic etc. and I KNOW that it is not necessary to have such spindly and unstable float arrangements ....... HYCo was where my lass fell in as the finger tilted ... but as I say they are same as most other places so cannot blame HYCo, in fact some others close by ...... believe Emsworth YH may have thinner fingers !!!!!!

By and large - HYCo is OK ...... otherwise its join a club and have their yard ??????

Re: HYC at full moon

Ah yes, I know a few folk who won't let the yard touch their boats, or who aren't on speaking terms with John, but I'm not not one of them and having been at other similarly priced yards, I'd say they are no worse than I'd expect elsewhere. They are cheap, and sometimes you get what you pay for. And the yard has been steadily improving over recent years. It's been a while since anyone reversed over the electric meter with a tractor, for instance...

Have you tried Port Solent? We hauled out there last year and, whilst not exactly cheap, I suspect it is no more expensive than Haslar. Service was very good, with plenty of power points and water taps around. They usually have a special winter rate regardsless of whether you are afloat or ashore, and then charge for the lift out/in seperately.
Try looking on www.premiermarinas.com
