Monday October 22nd- The Last Anchor

If I'd been served this food in a swanky London restaurant it wouldn't have been out of place. Pricey for Ipswich, but the nosh was top drawer. The style is slightly poncy but the caramelised pear (starter) and the grilled chicken tart (also starter) were spot on.

We ate off the cheaper menu - but you wouldn't have known it from the food quality. Two courses for 17 quid.

Main courses - can fully recommend the belly of pork - but only if you're really really hungry as it's a huge portion. The cod was superb and the accompanying vegetables excellent (although the missus finds the current trend for barely cooked green beans not to her liking).

Will definitely find an occasion to come back and try the a la carte menu. Word is, you need to book at weekends

Wine list did not match the food and had little choice - nevertheless the oz chardonnay we sloshed was pretty good drinking.

cheers

Simon

I'm with your misus on the veggie cooking. waving a hot flanel over the top of a green bean does not make it digestable. yes cooking to destruction does remove 95% of the goodness, but it is perfectly feasible to steamcook vegtables to a soft consistancy that allows the digestion to work properly rather than create marsh gas, after all the chinese have been achieving it for years.

When I get them like that I tell to take them back and cook them rather than serve them straight out of the freezer.

Ah, so it's not just me? I'm not at all impressed by the current fad for half (or less) cooked vegetables, but if I moan I get lectured at. The point about marsh gas is well made, however. I can use that... "Sorry about the smell, dear, it's nothing to do with the pints of real ale, it's those damned trendy vegetables..." /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
