I'm looking for a windlass that doesn't automaticaly lead the chain into a hawse pipe,or down ,to an anchor well.
There's a hawse pipe on my foredeck wich I think is the worse possible way of dealing with the chain on a small boat as it allows water in.I modified mine so it takes a screwed cap. At sea the tackle is pushed in,after disconecting the anchor, and the end is attached to the cap wich is then screwed on. As I raise the anchor the chain is laid on deck and washed and that's why I need this type of windlass, but so far I've not found a small one that doesn't have a guide of some sort.Does anybody know of a suitable model?

I'm a bit puzzled by what you want. Any windlass needs some mechanism for taking the chain away after its done its 180 degree turn round the gypsy. Normally it is gravity that does this job - how do you want it to work if you want to lay the chain horizontally on the deck> Are you going to pull it by hand?

If you are then the Lofrans I had would do the job - all you need to do is to ignore the hole for the chain locker and make sure the stripper is re-positioned.

I know what you want and I spent ages looking for just such a windlass - without success. The one I have at the moment is the manual Simpson Lawrence SL Anchorman which works as you describe. I found that it can be converted to the powered version but at a cost which is far more expensive than any of the more modern new windlasses. In the end I have just stuck to the manual one.

The nearest I came to what you are looking for is from the Goiot range- see here:

Hope this helps but I guess not much!!

Thats a hard one Nuno as most gypsys need a 90 degree turn to grip the chain safely and securely, I think.
Though I made a plug that fits on the chain where it goes into the hawse pipe, that worked well for long passages.

By the way, you were not in Portimao 99/2000 winter? I was in Portugal mainly on the Guadiana 99/2005. venho Primavera.

Hi
In 2000 I had the boat ashore in Faro when I was reffiting her.I'll be here in the Primavera though.
I know this is a tall order but I'm trying to find a way of having a windlass without a hole right at the bow.I'm not really comfortable with a plug although i don't entirely dismiss the idea.I'm sure it can be made to work.
Thanks Wotayottie and Davewarburton for your advice and link.

A vertical axis windlass such as the SL Anchorman already suggested is the only sort that would work as it takes the chain through 180 degrees and exits horizontally - although in most installations you then have a hawse to drop the chain vertically into a locker. The hawse on the SL is both small and faces aft and I have never experienced water coming thru mine.
However in normal use the chain would go toward the bow and I am not sure that 20-30 metres of chain piling up there on the deck is a good idea. Powered vertical windlasses are available, but I think you would have problems controlling the rate of recovery - they tend to be on or off and you would likely need to pause regularly to deal with the pile of chain.

If your concern is about water getting into the locker thru the hawse, why not just make a bung that fits around the chain where it goes through the hawse. Or if the anchor is not going to be used immediately, unshackle it and put a line on the chain attached to the bung on the hawse.
