Windlass winds in, but not out

OK , I am amongst my own.

I am not going to ask why you needed to photograph that. I hope the self tappers are holding the lid on and not just randomly placed fittings screwed into the tank.

Oh no, it's not the lid, I think it's how the aircon compressor was installed.

Yes, I am only kidding :D. It is the lid.

Hi V

Just to be completely clear, it's not a single click, it's click-click-click-click while the drum is turning, but without the chain moving. Still, without getting back down to the boat, I can't investigate much further.

Hmm, I'd missed this in your post. That is most peculiar. Obviously you fitted the same size calibrated chain to the existing chain?

"it's click-click-click-click while the drum is turning, but without the chain moving"

Sound quite strange!!! because if the gypsy is turning then you would think it would pick up the chain? Yes?

You sure the chain is the same spec as the old J ?

Good question. As far as I can tell it's the same - I bought it to the same spec, and the dimensions are the same. Until I can see the fault again close-up I can't go much further with this one I don't think. This all goes directly to Deleted User's point about the prob with med boats being that you can't just pop down there when you want to fix something.

Ah, it's all in the timing of the edits... :D:D:D

I think you ought to make a special trip down at the end of next week to join in with the official u/w light inspection!

Jimmy, I'd love to but my liver needs at least 3 weeks between dinners with EME. Will let you know though when we next head down.

???
sorry I'm missing the plot now, obviously take back all that I've typed!

Is the click-click happening with the motor heard spinning but no gypsy turning when you press the down button???
From what I understand there's no freewheeling on this winch?

You didn't miss it, I think I just wasn't clear enough before. And yes, on the chain size.

Hmm, is there a sacrificial pin in the hub assembly? I am wondering if is there is perhaps that is why you can deploy but can't retrieve? But I am guessing now. I can't make out a sacrificial pin in the exploded diagram but that would add up with the jamming sequence you described.

I say that's normal. I've had that many a time when my anchor chain has been jammed due to fallen over pyramid or twisted chain. On both my previous boats, which had galv chain and Lewmar

You now have a fault, possibly in the actual mechanism that does the click click click, but the click click click itself is normal and not a fault. Though I readily admit I dunno what components (in the exploded drawing) do the clicking, and I therefore conclude it must be inside the gearbox.

Separately, above pics "prove" you can have a grp black tank virtuvas. Hooray!

Wakeup, 640 x 480. Wake up!

Mate, if you haven't got a photo of the _inside_ of your holding tank, then you're just not trying hard enough....

Wonderfull, Jimmy :D

I have loads of photos - but inside my holding tank!!
Now thats something.
We've bee in there lots of times to clean the sender and once with a hose but I never thought to take a photo.

We did put the inspection video camera inside the fuel tanks last year when we were getting rid of the bug but the holding tank - what and idea!!

I give up, jfm, that means you recon the actual motor is pushing something about but not all the bits up to the gipsy? Is there a clutch in this thing? I mean some of my original problems that led to the full dismantle of my windlass was indeed blocked chain in the box. BUT in my case it just made the actual clutch slip indefinitely both on up and down...

jfm, yep on the holding tank! :D
I'll investigate next week, but jtb should report how his tank is performing re smells and leaks ;)

ideally, jtb should invite the parties interested to investigate on the spot (but not yet now, make sure weather is resonably hot :p)

cheers

Jacques Le Constructeur

May I suggest you remove that image? You'll be giving Jack ideas of a "Whose boat is this ? " series (based upon similar images ) every Friday . No Thanks!

I posted this yesterday then deleted it as its difficult to explain but I think its simple.........

The crack to the left is the problem.

<snip>

I agree Pete.

The constant click-click-click-click-click-click-click is usual if the gypsy has jammed, for whatever reason. I'd bet good money it isn't the contactor (solenoid pack).

Jimmy, i think changing the stripper will cure the problem. In the unlikely event it doesn't, i have a spare contactor in the workshop that you're welcome to borrow, if it's suitable.

I've got a long and properly unpleasant story as to why I have this and many other photos of the inside of my holding tank .... but now is not the moment. :D

Hiya Paul, thanks for that offer. The new s/s stripper as suggested by Myag is on order and as soon as it turns up here I will be heading for the SoF, armed with allen keys and a picnic lunch (after all, I've got to test the launching of the anchor somehow, haven't I?).
