Windlass relay/solenoid

I have a Quick windlass. A few years ago I replaced the constantly failing Up/Down switch with a remote controlled ebay unit. The remote receiver contains a small relay which I've been use to energise the main solenoid (I guess it's a solenoid). However this weekend the solenoid has been failing to actuate. Operating either Up or Down results in a rapid clicking within the main solenoid and therefore no power to the windlass... :(

I can see there is some arcing within the solenoid which I take to be some internal relays oscillating - at different ends of the solenoid depending on whether I'm requesting. And I can hear the lightweight relay in the remote receiver clicking too.

So I'm left wondering what the problem is

1. The remote is obviously working.
2. The receiver works (and selects the appropriate output to energise)
3. The main solenoid clicks / fails on both up and down so I think it's unlikely to have failed internally (I can see some arcing at different places near the up/down +ve wires according to whether I'm requesting Up/Down

So I'm working on the assumption that the remote receiver, although operating correctly, is failing to supply sufficient power to activate the main solenoid properly perhaps the internal low-power relay has failed or failing (it still operates at some level though). Therefore I'm planning to replace the remote/receiver (this is a cheapo e-bay job)

Is my diagnosis/supposition likely to be correct?

It sound like the relay contacts in the remote control receiver are damaged most likely but the arcing you get when a heavy duty DC contactor/relay is de energised.
